Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category 18th Century Arts) for Thursday, January 22, 2026 (Season 42, Game 99):
A “word book” for the London premiere of this work began with the quote Majora canamus, “Let us sing of greater things”
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Alex DeFrank, an analyst from Brooklyn, New York
|
W. Kamau Bell, a comedian & author from Oakland, California
|
Ashley Chan, a publicist from Lewisville, Texas
|
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
Quarterfinal #4 of the 33rd Tournament of Champions is between Ashley Chan, W. Kamau Bell, and Alex DeFrank. This is one of the more intriguing matchups of the tournament for a couple of reasons. First and foremost, W. Kamau Bell is looking to follow in the footsteps of Ike Barinholtz; Kamau won Season 3 of ABC’s Celebrity Jeopardy and would like to win his quarterfinal. On the other hand, he’s up against a pair of very strong champions in Ashley Chan and Alex DeFrank. Alex had some very dominant performances, but he also had a couple of ones where he struggled with incorrect responses. I think today’s outcome will probably be determined by the number of incorrect responses that Alex gives throughout this game. One thing I’m also curious about: I know that Kamau made an appearance at an “Inside Jeopardy” event—if Juveria Zaheer, who was also at that event, put Kamau in touch with her own coaches, I think Kamau could surprise a lot of people today.

Correct response: What is Messiah? (by Handel)

For the second Tournament of Champions in a row, we have a Final Jeopardy clue in the quarterfinals about one of the works of George Frideric Handel. While last year’s was about the premiere of Water Music, today’s is about Messiah. Composed in 1742 for vocal and instrumental performers, it is best known today for its Hallelujah chorus at the conclusion of Part II.
To me, the puzzle pieces that need to be put together to solve this would be “London premiere would mean it’s written by someone living in England” + “Let us sing means it’s probably famous for its vocal parts” + “18th century / 1700s” = Messiah.
