Our Home And Native Land

Andy back again!

I’ve had a pretty eventful last 24 hours. First up, I’m writing this right after getting home from seeing “The Desolation of Smaug”. Love the movie; hate that I have to wait until next year to see the next one!

Next up: Jeanie finally made it to Los Angeles and the studio where she was in the audience for tapings this afternoon! No spoilers, though!

And finally: There was a pretty big fire in downtown Kingston today as well; a propane tank at a construction site exploded about a mile from Queen’s University — the school where our defending champion Matthew Church is a med student! I tweeted him, hoping to find out if he had been affected, but I received no reply. He has been on Twitter though, so he’s probably just ignoring me. Oh well.

Now on with the show!

Today’s contestants: Debbie Singer and Sandy Howard are the challengers, Matthew Church won $24,000 yesterday!

J! round categories:
O CHRISTMAS TREE
THE CONFEDERACY
GETTIN’ YOUR DRINK ON
ELEMENTAL ETYMOLOGY
TV
RHYME SPREE

All three contestants had good luck on the buzzer over the first few clues, but Sandy ran TV to take an early lead into the break!

Scores at the end of 15:
Sandy $4,200
Matthew $2,400
Debbie $1,200

Matthew is apparently the youngest-ever finalist for Prince George’s “Citizen Of The Year”. I wonder if his run on Jeopardy! will see him reach that status again…

O CHRISTMAS TREE was a partially video category! Amazingly, it didn’t have a Daily Double! It was in THE CONFEDERACY, under the $1000 clue! Debbie’s to play

Sandy $5,600
Matthew $5,000
Debbie $3,600

Debbie bet just $1000. Her clue: “Tough job! In November 1862 James Seddon became the fourth man in this Cabinet post in 19 months” Debbie’s response of “Commander of the Confederate Armies” dropped her to $2,600.

DJ! round categories:
DID YOU GET MY LETTER?
AMERICAN INVENTORS
1939 BEST PICTURE OSCAR NOMINEES
NOVEL NARRATORS
EUROPEAN PORTS
STARTS WITH 2 VOWELS

Matthew went straight into the Oscar category — good for him! A surprising Triple Stumper at $1,200 (A-yup! This actor rode to stardom on “Stagecoach” as The Ringo Kid). All 3 players had luck on the buzzer, leading to good scores! The first Daily Double was under DID YOU GET MY LETTER $1200. Sandy’s to play with the following scores:

Sandy $10,800
Debbie $9,400
Matthew $6,200

Sandy bet $3,000. Her clue: “Twenty thousand pounds sterling I think will be a cheap purchase” for West Point, he wrote to Major Andre July 15, 1780. Sandy said George Washington and fell to $7,600.

EUROPEAN PORTS $2000 was the final Daily Double. This one belonged to our champion! The minute-to-go signal had been given and the scores were:

Debbie $9,800
Matthew $8,600
Sandy $7,800

Matthew bet $4,400! His clue: This Polish shipbuilding port’s town hall once served as the office of the Hanseatic League. Matthew said Krakow and fell to $4,200.

Inexplicably, he went to the $800 clue. Dude, you need money to catch up, why are you taking out low-valued clues? Needless to say, 4 $1600 and $2000 clues went unplayed, and scores going into Final Jeopardy! were:

Debbie $9,000
Sandy $7,800
Matthew $5,400

FJ! category: CLASSICAL MUSIC

FJ! clue: “Royal March of the Lion”, “The Aquarium”, & “The Aviary” are thematically related 1886 works from this man

Matthew 5400 – 400 = 5000
Sandy 7800 – 4000 = 3800
Debbie 9000 – 6601 = 2399

No problems with the betting here; Matthew Church is now a 2-day champion! Will he make it 3 tomorrow?
