I bin von Oestareich…. Believe it or not, I know prople who watch that movie (TSoM) EVERY YEAR….Reinhard fendrich has a song with this title (i bin von Oesterreich) which is played on OS (Austrian Airlines) every time a flight approaches Vienna/Schwechat Airport when coming from a foreign country. Nice touch.
The usual easy Friday.
If this is not a 3/3 resp. everybody left get’s it then i will watch Wile E. Coyote for a week.
Beep Beep!
Just bought some stock in ACME…
Btw, can somebody please explain Jon’s wager in FJ? He did not cover against either opponent. Given the wager by all 3 players it seems to me that nobody was comfy with the category (“Coins” or “European coins/currency”) would have been more accurate. “Plants” was somewhat misleading, at least it seemed to intimidate the players, judging by the FJ wagers. With the popularity of TSoM I am still baffled by the outcome. I know a lot of people who think “EDELWEISS” is the national anthem of Austria, followed by “The Blue Danube Waltz”. The actual anthem is hardly known outside of Austria, not even that much IN Austria, though it was composed by Mozart. The most popular Austrian anthem ever was the “Kaiserhymne”, composed by Joseph Haydn, since 1918 Germany’s anthem. First the Weimar Republic, then Hitler (together with the “Horst Wessel Lied”.) Many Austrians feel that Germany “stole” Haydn’s anthem. But as for the game, at least the leader going into FJ won the game.
Tough break for Clint and Allan, both could have won by going all in (and being right). At least they were in the right area. You can find the Edelweiss flower in the alpine regions of Germany and Switzerland as well.
Well, have a great “long” weekend everybody and HAPPY 4th of July!!
I am looking forward to the fireworks, they will have an experiment with SOUNDLESS fireworks in Lahaina (Maui). At least my cats won’t hide under the bed all night if it actually works!
And the players obviously know some German, since “Zei” is on the coin, meaning “two” in English. Taken that into account Austria, Germany and Switzerland were the most logical choices. I am surprised that J did not redact the word “:Zwei”.
The German word for two is zwei, just like the coin says.
How many answers did Jon get wrong?
One, I believe.
Actually it was two.
A confusing question. The category was Plants. Unclear if they wanted the plant Adeleweiss or the country
I don’t follow. The clue clearly said “this country” — a convention used by the show for over thirty years.
Even as an (Ex)European it tyook that long for another ball to drop. Switzerland was in any event a wrong answer, HAD to be, since the C.H. is NOT a member of the E.U. or Eurozone and does not print or mint Euro currency. It is of course widely accepted but at a murderous exchange rate unless you go to a bank. But in restaurants, boutiques etc they rob a blind guy (like in any other country when you pay with foreign currency). So the word “Euro” should have eliminated Switzerland from the get go.
Yea, it was a bit confusing as at first it seemed like they were going for the flower but it did clearly say “this European country.”
I guessed edelweiss right away but thought it was Switzerland. I’ve visited all three countries and even spent a week in Stowe, Vermont, where the family went to escape the Nazis. We got to visit the house.
Maurine:
Ironically enough, I had two friends in Stowe this week who went to the Von Trapp house!
It seems like Alex Trebek wore a Halloween costume at the beginning of the show today.
Dal:
As a Canadian, I am offended that you would consider a Canada 150 hockey jersey “a Halloween costume”.
As an American who unequivocally supports your favourite show, your passion for it expressed through this site, and your outstanding country, I share and join in the offense.
What are you talking about guys?
You denigrated an item being used to celebrate a milestone birthday of my country as a “Halloween costume”. That’s why we’re offended by your remarks.
I think comments should be more closely moderated…
You should see what gets deleted every day. 🙂
Darn — I’ve never had a comment deleted. Am I doing something wrong?
Did anyone else notice that on the clue in “20th Century Names” about Coco Channel, Allan Ashley clearly did not phrase his answer in the form of a question. Was this just bad editing or did Alex and all the other judges just not notice.
I have replayed on my DVR three times, it is clerly just answered as “Coco Channel”.
What is your take?
My take is that it was phrased properly because the judges listen for that specifically and would have told us if he did not. They have direct audio lines on each contestant.
It was barely audible on the broadcast but it was there and my take is that it was swallowed a little bit while Alex was calling on him.
Agree a little with both! I also had to re-listen a time or two before I could confirm to myself that there was a bit of a “who’s” leading the answer. It could have been overlapping lines; it could also have been super-tight editing. Sometimes they take out dead air to tighten up the pace, and if it the edit goes only a frame or two too far it can change what it sounds like at home. But I’m comfortable the judges got it right.
Thanks Andy and Kevin, I appreciate the notes back. This is my first time posting to this page, but I am a regular follower of the page and love all the data and stats.
