More information about Final Jeopardy:

Wanting a monarchist ally in the Americas, French Emperor Napoleon III, in 1864, installed Austrian archduke Ferdinand Maximilian as Emperor Maximilian I of Mexico. Napoleon III had the support of the Mexican “hacendado” elite in his attempt to revive the ways of the Viceroyalty of New Spain, which existed from 1521 to 1821. Maximilian’s reign was beset by constant conflict between the conservative elite who had backed him and Benito Juárez’s Liberals (with the Liberals having the backing of the United States); his reign only lasted three years, with Maximilian being executed in 1867.

  1. Congratulations to Karen but I feel bad for Alex. His one and only appearance, he won $28,801, but who was watching J! on Christmas night…
They could have aired reruns for a couple of days as they do on Saturdays.

  2. Hey, Howard, hard to “feel sorry” for Alex… After all, he is walking away with $28,801 plus $2000 more today!

  3. Congrats to Karen, yet another new champion. And we have seen again the weakness in all things foreign in FJ. Maximilian was shot and after all the brother of Francis Joseph I of Austria, who reigned from 1848-1916, leading Austria-Hungary into WWI after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie, Franz Ferdinand was the nephew of Franz Joseph I.
Charles I. then became emperor in 1916 (he was the nephew of Franz Ferdinand). Died on Madeira 1922, aged 34 and was married to Zita of Bourbon -Parma (1892-1989).She survived Charles by almost 68 years.

  4. Like Usha and Alex, my guess was French Guiana.

It looks like a whole lot of clues were left on the board. Although I took a Latin American history course in college, I am bored by all those greedy people plotting their evil deeds.

    • The high amount of unplayed clues makes the show less fun to watch. I couldn’t watch the show the last 2 days, but I would not have wanted to.
