Happy Wednesday! Day 3 of the Tournament of Champions hosted by Buzzy Cohen. It’s been so great to see all of the positive feedback for Buzzy’s hosting thus far this week. Because he’s been through the same experience the contestants have been through and knows the stakes, he’s been able to match the contestants’ intensity. This will make for a better tournament overall.
Now: here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Middle Eastern Geography) for Wednesday, May 19, 2021 (Season 37, Game 168):
Of the 6 countries that border the Red Sea, it’s last alphabetically
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s contestants:
Ryan Hemmel, a legal technology professional from Los Angeles, California![]() |
Paul Trifiletti, an attorney from Athens, Georgia![]() |
Jennifer Quail, a wine tasting consultant from Dowagiac, Michigan![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts: The prediction model thinks that Jennifer is the favorite to win overall, having brought strength in terms of Coryat, Daily Double play, and Final Jeopardy! correct responses. She’s been given a slightly difficult draw in Paul and Ryan, who are both strong enough to have an average-or-better chance at semifinal spots.
PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they are able to. When wearing a mask, ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

Remembering that Israel and Jordan’s coastlines are on the Gulf of Aqaba (and that Somalia’s northern coast is on the Gulf of Aden), the 6 countries that border the Red Sea are Egypt, Sudan, Eritrea, and Djibouti (to the west) and Saudi Arabia and Yemen (to the east).

Andy’s Thoughts:
- When you’re above $10,000, it becomes very difficult to figure out proper bet sizing. I can see why Ryan would bet incredibly conservatively.

Man, I feel like I’m watching a different tournament than everyone else. Whatever it is about Buzzy that rubs me the wrong way has definitely translated from the contestants’ lectern to the host’s. I’ll be pretty disappointed if he gets the full-time gig. I’m glad to see most others are enjoying his work, though. 🙂
I love Ryan Bilger and was thrilled to see him dominate on Monday. If this were a regular game I might have taken umbrage with the “Go for the kill” comment (imagine the vitriol if James Holzhauer said that during one of his drubbings), but he’s wasn’t stomping out anyone’s life-long dream on national television. Jason and Sarah are multi-game winners and they’re not even necessarily out of the competition.
Also, wanted to give a shout-out to the writers for keeping the three quarterfinal FJs at around the same difficulty level. A lot of attention gets paid to revealing every clue on the board during the quarterfinals, but ensuring everyone has a roughly equivalent chance to double-up in a scenario where wild cards are in play is also essential.
Should be a fun next few days. Maybe Buzzy will finally win me over. 😉
If I may, Buzzy has brought a level of enthusiasm and energy sorely lacking so far this season. He’s confident and comfortable in the role and I believe that is conveyed to the contestants to the benefit of the overall presentation. I would have no problem with him being the host for the next thirty years.
Learn something new every day. All this time I’d thought I’d been swimming in the Red Sea when I was in Eilat, Israel. Thanks, Andy, for the useful tidbit.
I lucked out on this one. When they say “last alphabetically,” it’s usually someplace that starts with ‘Y’ or ‘Z’. All I could I think of was Yemen, not knowing if it bordered the Red Sea.
Buzzy Cohen is like the smart kid whom the teacher asks to monitor the class when he leaves the room. Smart kids are rarely charismatic, but he may win us over eventually.
Wait, what? I think Buzzy is extremely charismatic! Interesting…
I agree! I like him, think he runs a good show, and is fun to watch. His pronunciation, btw, seems fine to me. He’s fine, too, imo.
BUZZY should be among the top 2 or 3 choices for permanent Jeopardy host. What do you mean – he may win us over eventually ??? Buzzy has brought Jeopardy back to life!!!
Yep, just like you; X Y Z, and it’s Yemen for the win. But unlike you Buzzy passed my audition on his first day.
I thought Buzzy had a great third day. He is definitely starting to grow on me. Still kind of nerdy though. If they banned all nerds from Jeopardy!, however, there wouldn’t be enough people left to have a show.
The jeopardy website had an incomplete clue all morning. It said “…this one is last” like last what? lol
Jennifer was a favourite today and she got the job done.
Jennifer is TOUGH and I really enjoy watching her play. I had her as my 2nd overall pick to win after Jason, though Ryan B’s performance shifted things a bit. This is shaping up to be a great tournament.
Where Jennifer had “helter skelter” for the correct answer to. Synonym for “Pell mell” in category “between hell and high” I came up with “higgledy piggledy.” Wonder if they would have given me that.
I don’t see why not
I thought Nibir was precariously placed at first, but he’s looking pretty good right now.
Probably asked but how much do players earn who don’t go to the next tournament of champions round?
If I recall correctly, all of the contestants get $5,000 just for making it to the tournament and the six semifinalists who don’t make their way to the finals receive $10,000.
I wondered if they would take “haplessness” for “helplessness”. Also, I’m refreshed by Buzzy giving the full name answers, which Bill Whitaker didn’t (like, “He’s on the $100 bill” “Who is Franklin?” “Yes, Benjamin Franklin”).
There was an article on my phone that I missed, which was titled, “Ranking The Jeopardy Guest Hosts, From Best To Dr. Oz”!
No – “haplessness” comes too early in the dictionary – it needed to be between “hell” and “high”.
Ah, I didn’t even notice. In the words of dear, departed Alex, “Ooh, so close!”
