Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category European Cities) for Wednesday, February 8, 2023 (Season 39, Game 108):
Alphabetically the first German city in encyclopedias, it was also the first one taken by the Allies in World War II
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Dan Wohl, a high school history teacher from Forest Hills, New York![]() |
Becky Molder, a social media specialist from Salt Lake City, Utah![]() |
Matthew Marcus, a software developer from Portland, Oregon (4-day total: $114,200)![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
4-time champion Matthew Marcus goes for victory number five today against Becky Molder and Dan Wohl.
If you have friends in the LGBTQIA+ community, especially any trans or non-binary friends, the last week or so has been difficult for them, and the next few days will continue to be difficult for them; the amount of hatred on the Internet towards them in the form of people openly trolling them (over Hogwarts Legacy) is disgusting. Even allies are being showered in hate from trolls. Please check in on your friends to make sure they’re doing okay.
PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they can, including any boosters as recommended. When wearing a mask, please ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

Not only is Aachen generally the first German city alphabetically, but it’s also the westernmost city in Germany—which explains why, on October 21, 1944, it was the first German city to be liberated by the Allies during World War II. Aachen Cathedral, which had been consecrated in 805, was damaged during this period, but the basic structure of the cathedral survived; Charlemagne was buried at the cathedral in 814.

Today’s interviews:
Dan got married on Halloween.
Becky is a big fan of axe-throwing.
Matthew once spent 76 hours on a Greyhound bus.
Andy’s Thoughts:
- Friendly reminder that the show has much better audio than anyone has at home; if they believe a contestant pronounced a response properly, then it means it happened, and that we’re missing something at home.
- $20,000 is the highest Coryat score in the “Sky’s the Limit” era for a player locked out before Final.
- With regard to the Palmolive Building clue: The clue said “to play on”. The show clearly stated it was making a play on words. It was not a direct quote. There was no mistake in the clue.
- Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.
Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

Becky: Bet whatever you like. (Actual bet: $5,100)
Dan: Limit your bet to $399. (Actual bet: $399)

I remember the Battle of Aachen as the follow-up to the strategically unsuccessful Operation Market Garden. It stays in my mind for that, as well as for being the capital and final resting place of Charles the Great.
It stays in my mind as I was once a young, dumb American soldier who fell asleep on a train in 1985 and ended up at the end of the line which was Aachen. I ended up wandering around the cathedral and saw Charlamagne’s throne before getting back on a return train to Frankfurt. Good times!
Aachen and Arlington, Virginia, where I used to live, are sister cities. That fact helped me, but I suspect that the three contestants will guess the right answer anyway. Not very many city names start with “Aa”.
Is $20,000 the highest ever Coryat for second place in a lock game?
It is noted above that it is.
To be fair, it was added after the question.
Aachen was the battle that I remebered while studying the War history. Charles the Great that I remember pretty well too. I would love to visit the site of his burial one of these days. Happy to see Dan winning this match. Matthew will be back in the Tournament of Champions.
Andy,
Again, thanks for your support for the trans and non-binary community. As a non-binary trans woman, who first started to come out almost 29 years ago, I’ve fought a lot of these battles. I let a lot of the hate this week roll off of me because I’ve heard all of this before, many times. I’m even seeing old anti-gay and anti-lesbian tropes being repurposed of late, especially as relates to laws in the state legislatures. It’s truly distressing on one level, but it also seems to be the death rattles for a regime that truly on its last legs, as many of its most staunch supporters are, shall we say, “aging out”.
Your support and advocacy make me very happy to have found this community last year, during Amy Schneider’s run. And seeing champions like Amy and Mattea and how they have used their platform has made me very happy with the J! community.
Kudos to Dan for an excellent game and an aggressive DD bet! Matthew is a strong player. But missing two DDs is no recipe for victory.
Like Ken, I think we will certainly be seeing Matthew again in the TOC. Four wins and $116K usually gets you in. Congrats to Dan on pulling this off!
I didn’t get this one, unfortunately. Couldn’t brainstorm any “German cities alphabetically before Berlin” in time. Did get the last DD just before the buzzer, though.
Glad the unplayed clue turned out to be moot.
It’s about a video game?
It’s a lot more than “it’s about a video game”; it just happens that the release of this video game has brought a number of issues to the forefront.
Here’s the link to the NYT article about it. Andy, I’m so happy with the tone you set on this blog. I understand if you don’t want to further the discussion here since this is about Jeopardy. But I love that you call it out.
