Today’s Final Jeopardy – Tuesday, April 11, 2023

Warning: This page contains spoilers for the April 11, 2023, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that the game airs as early as noon Eastern in some U.S. television markets.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Nobel Peace Prize Winners) for Tuesday, April 11, 2023 (Season 39, Game 152):

At times they each lived on Vilakazi St. in Soweto, so it claims to be the world’s only street home to 2 Nobel Peace Prize winners

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Kat Jepson, an artist originally from Virginia Beach, Virginia
Kat Jepson on Jeopardy!
Mark Sutch, a theatre professor from Concord, North Carolina
Mark Sutch on Jeopardy!
Robbi Ramirez, a writer from Orlando, Florida (1-day total: $23,800)
Robbi Ramirez on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Orlando’s Robbi Ramirez is your new champion on Jeopardy! after a very strong Double Jeopardy! round; today’s challengers are artist Kat Jepson and theatre professor Mark Sutch.

Meanwhile, the spring Gamers vs. MS Twitch live-stream charity relay started on Friday! As always, many Twitch streamers—I’ll be joining the relay for the fifth time—will collectively raise money for MS Canada from April 7–17. Canada has some of the highest rates of multiple sclerosis in the world, with an estimated 1 in 385 Canadians living with MS. MS is an autoimmune disease of the central nervous system that attacks myelin, the protective covering over the nerves. If the damage is bad enough, nerve impulses can be completely disrupted. There is no cure; however, researchers are learning more daily. I’ll be streaming on my Twitch channel from 2AM to 8AM Eastern on Friday, April 14; a donation link will be posted soon for those who want to donate in advance!

PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they can, including any boosters as recommended. When wearing a mask, please ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

1984 Nobel Peace Prize winner Desmond Tutu & 1993 winner Nelson Mandela at one time both lived on Vilakazi Street in Soweto, a neighborhood in Johannesburg, South Africa. On the street itself, Mandela’s House is now a historical museum.

That said, does nobody want to tell Vilakazi Street about a little thing called 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue? Because I’m pretty certain that four residents of that address alone (Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Jimmy Carter, and Barack Obama) have won the Nobel Peace Prize. While there’s nothing wrong factually with the wording of today’s Final, as the clue only says that Vilakazi Street makes a claim—but this is only opening Jeopardy! up to receiving otherwise-unnecessary negative feedback from viewers.

Game Recap:

Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: Bad Boys In Books; Architecturally Speaking; I Got The Receipts; A Presidential Last Name; Whales; Time For A “Little” Music)

Robbie got to the first Daily Double shortly before the commercial break, and used it to extend a lead that he held for the entirety of the second segment. However, both Kat and Mark were playing well and were still very much in contention after 30 clues.

Statistics at the first break (14 clues):

Robbi 6 correct 0 incorrect
Kat 5 correct 1 incorrect
Mark 3 correct 1 incorrect

Statistics after the Jeopardy round:

Robbi 11 correct 0 incorrect
Kat 9 correct 2 incorrect
Mark 6 correct 1 incorrect

Double Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: No, Prime Minister; Adapters; One Hot MoMA; The I.V. League; Queen Victoria Geography; A Language Of Consonant Plus Vowel)

Kat was certainly doing the best job of hunting Daily Doubles—and she was rewarded when she found both of them in a 3-clue span! Picking up a combined $8,000, she had a commanding but not insurmountable lead going into Final, while a pair of incorrect responses midway through the round took Robbi out of contention. Scores going into Final were Kat at $23,800, Mark at $13,600, and Robbi at $7,400.

Statistics after Double Jeopardy:

Kat 22 correct 2 incorrect
Mark 17 correct 3 incorrect
Robbi 15 correct 2 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 23 (0 today).

Final Jeopardy! today was the fifth Triple Stumper in the past seven games (only three of the last ten games have had at least 1 player get Final Jeopardy! correct.) That means Kat is your new champion; she returns to defend tomorrow!

Mark: Bet at least $6,801 to pass Kat if she’s incorrect. (Going all-in does maximize winnings if you do end up winning.) (Actual bet: $13,600)

Kat: Standard cover bet over Mark is $3,401. (Actual bet: $3,401)

  1. Knew Mandela right away…and then incorrectly guessed Kofi Annan.

  2. Michael Johnston | April 11, 2023 at 9:16 am |

Well, it wasn’t hard to come up with Tutu and Mandela, but I was worried that there was going to be someone else associated with the anti-apartheid movement who was actually part of the solution since I knew nothing about any of their former street addresses😕

  3. This one was not hard for me as well…two famous people from Soweto who were Nobel Peace Prize winners…Tutu and Mandela of course. Even though I had no idea about Vilakazi St. But Soweto does the trick.

    • Robert Fawkes | April 11, 2023 at 6:28 pm |

Exactly the same, Soweto screamed Mandela and Tutu. I honestly thought this was going to be a triple get rather than a Triple Stumper. I was genuinely shocked that not one of them got it. I thought this was a gimme.

      • Brett Alan | April 11, 2023 at 8:45 pm |

Gandhi was actually a smart guess, as he did live in South Africa at one point. But, yeah, I got it pretty quickly. Apparently Robbie didn’t know where Soweto is. I guess having been part of anti-apartheid protests I forget that there are adults who aren’t old enough to remember that fight.

        • My immediate thought about the contestants’ responses had also been that Robbi didn’t seem to even know where Soweto is.

  4. As a young person I don’t think I would have otherwise known this, but I just TA’d a course on the History of South Africa. Interestingly, Soweto is just an acronym for “South Western Townships.” And Mandela shared his peace prize with F.W. De Klerk.

  5. Triple stumper.

People were complaining that yesterday’s FJ was too easy. I thought this one was easier than yesterday’s FJ.

Just proves they are easy when you know it.

    • I assumed that the contestants would immediately (and correctly) associate Soweto with South Africa.

  6. David John Craven | April 11, 2023 at 5:58 pm |

I guess if you are of a certain age, this was a snap. One of the easiest Final Questions in quite a well. Shocked that it was a triple stumpter.

  7. Robert Fawkes | April 11, 2023 at 6:35 pm |

Upon reading the clue, I was about to call out Vilakazi Street due to their ridiculous claim as Pennsylvania Avenue was way ahead of Vilakazi St. both in time and sheer numbers. Thankfully, Andy caught that before I blew a gasket. They can make the claim but it is clearly false. As Andy pointed out, Jeopardy! needlessly opens itself up to criticism. Jeopardy!, do better.

  8. I assumed that the contestants would immediately (and correctly) associate Soweto with South Africa.

  9. I thought of Penn Ave too. But also, Beit Aghion on 9 Smolenskin St. in Jerusalem has been the home of Israeli Prime Ministers since 1974. Begin and Rabin were both Prime Ministers and both received the Nobel Peace Prize

    • Shimon Peres makes 3.

      • Forgot that one.

      • So then Vilakazi makes a truthful claim, one that so happens to omit the fact that there are two other residences with more than two. That’s marketing for ya.

Also, I’m too young to remember that Tutu got a Peace Prize. I spent too much of the time blanking on Soweto and admit this was not my finest hour. And I didn’t have the pressure the contestants did…

  10. I’m old enough to remember the anti-apartheid struggle very well. I also knew that Soweto, i.e. “South West Township,” is in South Africa. I got 1/2 of the answer correct with “Nelson Mandela.” Sadly, I forgot about Bishop Tutu. I guessed “F.W. De Klerk” for the 2nd part of the answer. He also won a Nobel Peace Prize. Drat!

  11. Bill Vollmer | April 12, 2023 at 11:39 am |

Since 1600 Pennsylvania Av. is the US President’s OFFICIAL address, I’m guessing the clue writer and editors didn’t consider it to be an “actual” address unlike the ones in Soweto, per today’s Final Jeopardy clue. Obviously with Andy’s explanation (and, his, plus other critiques of it,) the writer/editors could have possibly put qualifiers in the clue.
I knew from somewhere that Soweto was an neighborhood/region in South Africa, thought possibly it was part of Johanasberg. Deduced from there at one must have been Mandela, but didn’t think of of Archbishop Tutu.
