Today’s Final Jeopardy – Wednesday, June 28, 2023

Warning: This page contains spoilers for the June 28, 2023, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that the game airs as early as noon Eastern in some U.S. television markets.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category The Medical World) for Wednesday, June 28, 2023 (Season 39, Game 208):

He created a chest drain valve that aided breathing in wounded soldiers in Vietnam but is better known for a lifesaving measure

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Bryan White, a senior regulatory compliance analyst originally from Santa Maria, California
Bryan White on Jeopardy!
Vic Goel, a lawyer from Vienna, Virginia
Vic Goel on Jeopardy!
Chris Ban, an oral & facial surgeon from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (1-day total: $13,000)
Chris Ban on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Chris Ban is your new Jeopardy! champion, winning $13,000 yesterday; he said in yesterday’s interview that he hopes to donate the winnings towards a boathouse at his alma mater in his late brother’s memory (Chris’s brother passed away from brain cancer last year). Today, your challengers are Vic Noel and Bryan White—who, from a strategic gameplay perspective, hopefully noticed that Chris did not bet to cover third place in yesterday’s game. I definitely would seriously consider going all-in from a trailing position today if Chris holds a lead going into Final.

In medicine, American thoracic surgeon Henry Heimlich is best known for two things: a chest drainage flutter valve that helps drain blood and air out of the chest cavity (thereby allowing a collapsed lung to re-expand), and the Heimlich maneuver, the technique of using abdominal thrusts in order to aid a choking victim. The Heimlich maneuver is intended as a method of last resort, due to its potential to cause further injury on the victim.

Interesting fact. Doctor Heimlich first performed the Heimlich maneuver,in real life, a few months before his death in 2016. My thanks to Doctor H. I have actually used the maneuver on my own kids, more than once.

  2. “Aided breathing”—“lifesaving measure”—“better known for”—went straight to “Heimlich”, of course! I predict that this will be a triple get.

  3. With the given info, it had to be Heimlich! I didn’t know his first name, or the chest drain apparatus he created. At any rate, this should be a triple get!

    • Same, I got this one immediately, but didn’t know his last name. Bruised a friend’s ribs years ago performing the Heimlich maneuver, but did dislodge the wedge of watermelon from her throat.

Wow! I’ve heard so much about the maneuver and seen it demonstrated in a class, but never got to meet anyone who has actually used it in real life.

  4. Yes, pretty easy. When I asked my dad and he uses talk to text, and it says Heineken 😆 🤣

  5. I got Heimlich right away. I would say that this would be a triple get as well, but I said that the other day on an “easy” FJ response, but the triple get was not to happen.

  6. Got it right away. A lifesaving measure that appeared to be medically related led me straight to Heimlich.

  7. Got this one right away. This was a life saving measure that led med to Heimlich

  8. ugh this font!

Re: The chest drain valve…I believe the following would be helpful to us visual learners…skip to 1:30 for the nitty-gritty…from the movie Three Kings.

Anyone else notice that Bryan got the Douglas Adams question wrong when he had $4,200???

  11. rodney bertelsen | June 28, 2023 at 8:22 pm |

Curious, here the local station ran a rerun today from late March with Lisa Sriken as champion.

  12. Yay! I got today’s Final! correct, also. Thankfully, I’ve never had to perform the Heimlich Maneuver on anyone, thus far. It’s in my toolbox, just in case, though.
