Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category National Anthems) for Friday, June 30, 2023 (Season 39, Game 210):

The name of this country’s national anthem translates as “His Majesty’s Reign” & its lyrics come from a 1,000-year-old poem

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Ilena Di Toro, a public relations specialist from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Ilena Di Toro on Jeopardy!
Courtney Johnston, an attorney from Denver, Colorado
Courtney Johnston on Jeopardy!
Bryan White, a senior regulatory compliance analyst originally from Santa Maria, California (2-day total: $32,007)
Bryan White on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Bryan White is now a 2-day champion on Jeopardy!; yesterday, he picked up his second runaway in two games. Today, which serves as Mayim Bialik’s final game as host this season, Courtney Johnston & Ilena Di Toro are your challengers.

“Kimigayo”, the national anthem of Japan, is said to translate to “His Majesty’s Reign”—though that translation has not been enshrined by law. Its lyrics come from an anonymous poem first published anonymously c.920 in the Kokin Wakashū. While the song had been Japan’s de facto anthem since 1880, the Act on National Flag and Anthem in 1999 formally established both Japan’s current flag and “Kimigayo” as the country’s official flag and anthem.

Double Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: Historic Greats; Serenity Now!; Science & Nature; Let’S Get “Down”; Pop Eye; The Sailor Man)

Double Jeopardy! saw some high-value incorrect responses keep the scores down. Meanwhile, Bryan found the last Daily Double on the second-to-last clue, and didn’t take clue #30 into account when making his bet sizing. This let Ilena break the runaway by getting clue #30 correct!

Statistics after Double Jeopardy:

Bryan 22 correct 4 incorrect
Ilena 10 correct 4 incorrect
Courtney 7 correct 3 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 35 (0 today).

Scores going into Final:

Bryan $9,300
Ilena $5,400
Courtney $4,000

Ilena was the only player correct in Final, so her correct get on clue #30 won her the game and dethroned Bryan! She’ll be back on Monday with Ken Jennings hosting.

Tonight’s results:

Courtney $4,000 – $3,810 = $190 (What is France?)
Ilena $5,400 + $4,100 = $9,500 (What is Japan?) (1-day total: $9,500)
Bryan $9,300 – $1,600 = $7,700 (What is Norway?)

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • There was a perfect bet size on that final Daily Double: $2,700. (Well, anything between $2,601 and $2,799, but $2,700 is the only multiple of 100 in the range).
  • Today’s box score: June 30, 2023 Box Score.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Bryan $9,300 Ilena $5,400 Courtney $4,000)

Bryan: Standard cover bet over Ilena is $1,501. (Actual bet: $1,600)

Courtney: Bet at least $3,801 to ensure you’re ahead of Bryan if he gets Final incorrect and you get it correct. (Actual bet: $3,810)

Ilena: Bet at least $2,601 to cover Courtney. (Actual bet: $4,100)

  1. I knew that Japan has the oldest royalty in the world, and that their Emperor was once a figure of worship. So a “1000-year old poem” and a national anthem about “His Majesty” led me right to it. I found this easy, but I wonder if others will also.
(P.S. Andy, do you know why I keep having to re-enter my “comments section” information (name, e-mail address, and “save for next time” check)? Yes, this is trivial, but it’s annoying. If I do it once, shouldn’t it stay put? Am I doing something wrong? I bow to your expertise.)

    • Hi:

Regarding your query, I don’t have an answer at this point. It’s on my list of things to look into over the coming week, though.

      • Don’t know whether this helps – If RedRose clears their cache/browser history (whether manually or automatically when the browser closes), they will probably have to re-enter their details.

    • Michael Johnston | June 30, 2023 at 11:21 am |

Cogent reasoning. I was too distracted trying to guess among all the other 1000+ year old countries with monarchies :/

      Current FJ! streak: 2L

      • I tried to narrow it down with “country has famous poetry?” but I don’t have that much exposure to old poetry, so guessed wrong with Italy. [The closest I got to guessing Japan was thinking maybe China, but then realized the clue seemed to be referring to a national anthem still in effect and I doubted one like that would still be the national anthem in China.]

    • Thanks RedRose! I thought it was just me! And yes! it is annoying to need to re-enter everything with each post.

      • Thomas G. | June 30, 2023 at 1:21 pm |

Come to think of it, I have had to re-enter my information all week. I thought it was me not saving my information by checking the box. I notice now that I need to re-enter my information. So I am glad that I am not really going crazy!!!

        • Judith P. | June 30, 2023 at 7:29 pm |

Me, too! I have also had to re-enter my personal info. all through this past week. Sigh…

      • So, for what it’s worth, I suspect it has to do with the fact that I was having the website “lazy load” the comment section, in order to help ensure the website does not crash during heavy traffic. Instead, I’m going to separate the comment section into pages in the hope that this saves the user information as intended.

  2. That was a fun game. I didn’t get Final. I considered France but the Marseillaise only dates back to just before the French Revolution. I was stumped. This is the second Japanese royalty question in recent weeks to stump contestants; the earlier one concerned the Chrysanthemum Throne.

I feel badly for Ilena: Her photo on the Jeopardy! website is so severe while she is joyful and animated during game play.

  3. VERY odd DJ! bet by Bryan, esp. since the math was pretty straightforward (I know well that you don’t have much time in that situation, but there was only one clue left, and Ilena’s total is the only one he had to consider). But good on Ilena for solid playing down the stretch and in FJ!

    • Robert J. Fawkes | June 30, 2023 at 6:38 pm |

As near as I can tell, Bryan just didn’t take into consideration that Ilena might get the final clue correct. He bet enough to double her score at the time but not if the final amount was included. That’s the only way I could account for what you called his “VERY odd” wager. I imagine if he had more time to think about it, he might have covered that circumstance as well. Sad for him, but happy for Ilena.

      • My point is, he had enough time, and since the board was down to one question, it wasn’t that hard to figure out. Bryan was a multi-game winner, so kudos to him, and I would not be surprised to see him do well on the “play in” tournament.

  4. Judith P. | June 30, 2023 at 7:35 pm |

Yay! I got today’s Final J! immediately. I lived and worked in Niigata, Japan for 4 years. “Kimigayo” is a short, easy-to-learn national anthem, in a minor key, musically. Haunting and beautiful. Worth Googling.

    • Did you teach English in Niigata? I’ve taught English in three Japanese locales, including Yamagata Prefecture. I once attended the Fuji Rock Festival.

The Baltimore Fox affiliate ran the March 31 episode today at 7. Thankfully, I’m close enough to DC that my cable provider also carries the DC broadcast channels, and the ABC affiliate there ran today’s episode at 7:30.

  6. Bill Vollmer | July 1, 2023 at 4:20 pm |

hearing/reading this game’s Final Jeopardy answer, I immediately said japan, not knowing of any other monarchy, whose anthem would translate as “His Majesty’s Reign,” especially if taken from an ancient poem.
The “clickbait” sites will go crazy over the number of “triple stumpers” this game. I ask these sensationalists, would have done any better? I know I couldn’t.
