Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Children’s Books) for Friday, January 5, 2024 (Season 40, Game 85):
A 2020 edition of this beloved 1911 novel came with a glossary of horticultural terms & a location guide

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Randall Rayford, a solar project developer from Houston, Texas![]() |
Michael Cavaliere, a consultant from New York, New York![]() |
Matt Harvey, a healthcare administrator from Providence, Rhode Island![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
It’s time for our next two-day total point final as we have Matt Harvey, Michael Cavaliere, and Randall Rayford do battle for a spot in Champions Wildcard. As always, today’s score gets added to Monday’s to determine the overall winner!
I noticed the tabloid headlines overnight claiming that Matt is a shoo-in to advance here, and I’m not entirely sure what these fans have been seeing in everyone’s respective play here. I felt like Michael played his semifinal having left something in the tank (though he was slightly fortunate to advance) and the numbers overall certainly say that Michael is the strongest player. Not only that, but Randall has also already showed a willingness to make the aggressive bets required to take a victory in this final. The only metric by which Matt really has an advantage is “amount of local press coverage”, which does merit some consideration, but one thing I can say is that anointing him as a victor at this point is premature.

The 2020 edition of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s 1911 classic The Secret Garden, published by Classics Made Easy, was published with a 150-term glossary, historic orientation, character, and location guide, so that 21st-century audiences would become more familiar with the language used in the book and the context in which it was written.
The book itself is about 10-year-old girl Mary Lennox, born unwanted in British India; when her parents die in a cholera epidemic, she is sent to England to live with her uncle. After being told of a secret garden, Mary herself attempts to find this secret garden herself as she finds her health and mood improving.

My first thoughts were “Wind in the Willows” or “Peter Rabbit”, but the clue elements and the date led me to “What is ‘The Secret Garden’?” just in the nick of time.
as opposed to me who incorrectly went with ‘where the garden grows’.
Hi RedRose, Thank you so much for your kind note on Wednesday, January 3, 2024. I just wrote you a small comment underneath your post on that day. Happy New Year!
Hi RedRose, I also mulled over “The Wind in the Willows” for the response, but I settled upon “The Secret Garden.” I was forced to read both books as a child, so I was familiar with both of them.
I think I’m surprised that this was a triple miss. When I read the answer I thought of all the children’s books I knew written about that time that could reference flora. I actually considered a couple of the answers that the contestants used but, in the end, The Secret Garden made the most sense even though I have never read the book nor seen the movie.
The elements in this clue led me to the secret garden since it definitely made sense. But I have not read that book. The flora was the key here
I got this one right because it’s the only book I could recall from that time that related to gardens. I’ve never read it or saw any of the film versions.
Today was what I can best describe as “I ALMOST got it.” Somehow the keywords of the answer lead me to Secret Garden, but couldn’t remember the first word of the title. I’m certain that as lienant as the judges can be at times, missing a word of a title is not acceptable. I must have of heard of The Secret Garden somewhere, sometime, because I certainly don’t remember ever reading it.
My guess is your hearing advertisements for the movie. Either the 1993 one (if you are within the right ages or just the 2020 one). [During the pandemic you may have been watching more TV than usual and thus seeing more commercials than usual or just streaming more and if not seeing ads there, at least seeing the tiles for their offerings of recent movies.]
Trying not to brag here, but I somehow had a perfect week for FJ. I put “Secret Garden” down with 8 seconds to spare here (adding the “the” with time) and was flabbergasted that it was right. I wasn’t confident with Brandenburg Gate either (the rest were easy), mind you, but… I’m just amazed that I went 5 for 5 for the first time I can remember. Helps my confidence in myself, though I still have no plans to actually be on the show. I couldn’t take the press, and I don’t think I’m good enough even still.
Nice job!!!! I’ve only done that once, but actually accomplishing it is a great feeling 🙂
Just before Christmas, I bought a copy of “The Secret Garden” for a friend who is learning English by reading books for children. That recent purchase made this one easy for me as it was foremost in my mind in the category “Children’s Books.”
I had no clue on FJ. That was a very interesting match today and because the scores are so low, it’s really anyone’s game come Monday.
