Group 1 of Winter 2024’s Champions Wildcard started with 31 players. After 2 Play-In games on TuneIn, and 9 quarterfinals, we’re now down to 9 semifinalists!
Monday, January 29, 2024:
Lloyd Sy (1) Rockford, Illinois ![]() 90 correct, 12 incorrect 3/4 on rebound attempts (on 17 rebound opportunities) 38.60% in first on buzzer (88/228) 3/6 on Daily Doubles (Net Earned: $3,890) 3/4 in Final Jeopardy Average Coryat: $16,700 Lloyd picked up 30 correct responses and was successful 81% of the time when attempting to buzz in his quarterfinal win over Dillon Hupp and Kelly Barry. |
|
Andy Tirrell (20) San Diego, California ![]() 54 correct, 8 incorrect 2/3 on rebound attempts (on 16 rebound opportunities) 31.58% in first on buzzer (54/171) 2/2 on Daily Doubles (Net Earned: $8,700) 2/3 in Final Jeopardy Average Coryat: $12,733 Andy won the competition’s opening game in runaway fashion over Katie Palumbo and Sharon Stone. |
Martha Bath (13) |
Overall Thoughts: Lloyd was one of the three most dominant players in the quarterfinals. If he can keep monopolizing the buzzer, he should have an easy time advancing. If not, I do think Andy is second favorite in this one; he did have a strong quarterfinal as well.

Tuesday, January 30, 2024:
Juveria Zaheer (9) Whitby, Ontario, Canada ![]() 132 correct, 21 incorrect 3/4 on rebound attempts (on 9 rebound opportunities) 47.37% in first on buzzer (135/285) 9/9 on Daily Doubles (Net Earned: $64,400) 3/5 in Final Jeopardy Average Coryat: $18,840 Juveria dominated proceedings in the second quarterfinal, picking up a $20,000 Coryat and over $30,000 going into Final. |
Alec Chao (19) |
Robbi Ramirez (14) |
Overall Thoughts: Juveria picked up exactly where she left off after Second Chance, dominating her quarterfinal here as well. If the Daily Doubles keep going her way, she’ll cruise to the final. However, one has to worry about “live by the sword, die by the sword” when it comes to those clues; one bad Daily Double and Alec and Robbi are right back in contention.

Wednesday, January 31, 2024:
Michael Menkhus (2) Kansas City, Missouri ![]() 100 correct, 21 incorrect 3/3 on rebound attempts (on 11 rebound opportunities) 46.93% in first on buzzer (107/228) 3/7 on Daily Doubles (Net Earned: $600) 2/4 in Final Jeopardy Average Coryat: $15,250 Michael picked up 28 correct in his quarterfinal win over Tamara Ghattas and Ittai Sopher. |
Erin Portman (12) |
Ron Cheung (17) |
Overall Thoughts: It was certainly noted in some corners on Friday that Michael went to the top row instead of Daily Double hunting. This is just a reminder that, even if you hate the category, it’s better to take the Daily Double yourself and make a small bet instead of letting it fall into the hands of a competitor. That said, I do think Michael has had the best performance of all three in this game, but if Erin or Ron find the betting clues first, it might be a more difficult path to the final for Michael.

Predictions:
Game 1: Lloyd Sy
Game 2: Juveria Zaheer
Game 3: Michael Menkhus
Well, tomorrow starts the 3 Semifinal matches for Group 1 of the 2024 Champions Wildcard Season 39.
Here are my predictions for the 3 matches and who I think will be moving on to the 2 day Finals on Thursday and Friday.
Predictions for the 3 Semifinal Games are as such:
#1 – Lloyd Sy – he showed the strength of player that he was when he defeated 13 game Champ Ray Lelonde and nearly won in a Runaway in Quarterfinal #7, where he was highly impressive. Martha Bath is surely no slouch and I predicted her to win her Quarterfinal as well. Andy Tirrell really impressed me with his Runaway win in Quarterfinal #1. I just believe Lloyd’s overall skills and buzzer prowess will lead to a win tomorrow night.
#2 – Juveria Zaheer – not many people came as prepared as she was for her “Second Chance” and she was dominant in Runaway fashion in Quarterfinal #2. Alec Chao and Robbi Ramirez were extremely strong in Double Jeopardy and will need to be again and if they somehow snag that Daily Double’s, they need to be highly aggressive (and correct), if they have any hope to beat Juveria.
#3 – Michael Menkhus – he was pretty strong in his Quarterfinal #9 win, though 1 more correct Daily Double from Tamara Ghattas and the game could have been much different. I had predicted Erin Portman to win her Quarterfinal #4 and she had to from 2nd entering FJ to win. And lastly, Ron Cheung was pretty fortunate to win his Quarterfinal #5 in a Triple Stumper FJ where 3rd place entering FJ seemed to bet too much.
If all 3 of my predictions win, I think we’d be in for a HUGE treat of intense competition in the 2 day final on Thursday and Friday, but this is why they play the games and anything can happen.
Let’s have some fun everyone!
If Juveria dominates her semifinal game and the finals to win this Champions Wildcard Tournament group to punch her ticket to the Tournament of Champions, do not be surprised to still see Juveria standing at the end of the TofC.
That is certainly a prediction.
Semifinals Predictions:
Game 1 – Lloyd Sy
Game 2 – Juveria Zaheer
Game 3 – Michael Menkhus
Champions Wildcard Group 1 Prediction:
1st Place Juveria Zaheer
2nd Place: Andy Tirrell
3rd Place: Michael Menkhus
