Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
The Montreal representation continues today as we reach the final week of Champions Wildcard—the Tournament of Champions begins on Friday! This semifinal features Diandra D’Alessio, Deb Bilodeau, and Taylor Clagett. I’m very interested in seeing how far Deb progresses, if at all, if only to prove that there is good reason to study Final Jeopardy strategy!

This is just a reminder: game material is selected randomly and independently of contestants—that is the overall fairest way of handling that situation.
As any Canadian will tell you, “It tastes awful. And it works”. That’s how Buckley’s cough syrup has been marketed since the 1980s, with Frank Buckley, the adopted son of William Knapp Buckley, as its pitchman.
The active ingredients in Buckley’s Original Mixture are ammonium carbonate, potassium bicarbonate, menthol, and camphor.
I think the best way for most viewers to get this Final is to focus on the fact that “antitussive”, realize it sounds a lot like Robitussin, and realize that Robitussin is a cough medicine. In fact, I don’t even think that the Canadian angle to the clue will provide any sort of advantage or disadvantage here to Montrealer Diandra.

Yes, linked it to robitussin. That’s the only reason I guessed correctly.
I linked it to pertussis, with the same outcome.
I actually linked “antitussive” to “pertussis”, which I caught on a trip to Toronto in 2001. For what it’s worth, the Buckley’s ads should have rang a bell, but did not, because I remember the “it tastes awful” tagline from when when I was in college at Bowling Green State from 1992-1995, and our cable system had CBC 9 from Windsor (and I was a devoted Hockey Night viewer). But, however I made the link, I made it. 😀
That is exactly what I came up with, only I used it’s more comon name, Whooping Cough. I didn’t think a simple cough would be a Final Jeopardy. Well I was wrong. There went my streak of getting Final Jeopardy right. Had to end sometime.
Like Gregory and Katerina E., I linked “antitussive” to “pertussis”. So, “What is coughing?”
Hi RedRose, Congrats on your correct response today. I also got today’s Final! right. I knew that the word meant “against coughing.” I also remembered the Robitussin brand of cough syrup. Cheers!
It seems to me that this was pretty easy for everyone who has responded thus far. For me, I think there is also an advantage to being a parent. What parent hasn’t had to try to get a dose of antitussive into a sick child, hoping it wouldn’t come back up? Lol
I got this one wrong by overthinking it. I, too, immediately thought of pertussis (Whooping Cough) and Robitussin cough medicine, but I also remembered that chest percussion is a long standing treatment for Cystic Fibrosis, so I put too much emphasis on JUST the “uss” all three have in common and went with “chest congestion” instead of “coughing”.
Yesterday’s rain out of the Daytona 500 will impact Fox affiliates’ Jeopardy! showings for today. My DVR guide hasn’t updated for the preemption, and the Baltimore affiliate’s web schedule has the race scheduled for 4pm to 8pm but doesn’t (currently?) have the 7pm Jeopardy! episode rescheduled. I’m at least able to catch the DC ABC channel’s showing at 7:30.
Rather than Robitussin, I got it from a different cough syrup called Pertussin (very close to pertussis).
Another group hug.
I love those! 🙂
That was one fun and great game. All of these players a great to watch!
Retro congrats to Deb and look forward to seeing you in the Finals starting in 2 days! You are the epitome of a fun Champion. Hiding behind the podium when hitting a Daily Double was classic! 🙂
Yep, the audience let out a audible gasp when the FJ was announced and I was intrigued as well, but as Andy said, that wasn’t really the part that mattered. The tussin part mattered completely and my answer a bemused “cough,” thinking can it be that easy? Thankfully I didn’t try to read more into it and change my mind.
On to the last Semifinal tomorrow and I’m anticipating another great game! 🙂
Goodnight everyone!
