Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Elements) for Friday, August 23, 2024 (Season 40, Game 142):

In his “Natural History” Pliny described it as “argentum vivum”

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

David Madden, an academic competition director from Ridgewood, New Jersey
David Madden on Jeopardy!
Arthur Chu, a writer originally from Cleveland, Ohio
Arthur Chu on Jeopardy!
MacKenzie Jones, a teacher & Ph.D. student from Tulsa, Oklahoma
MacKenzie Jones on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Quarterfinal #5 from the 2024 Jeopardy Invitational Tournament features David Madden, Arthur Chu, and MacKenzie Jones. Coming into this matchup back in March, I thought it was a very intriguing one, as MacKenzie had been very strong on Daily Doubles and Final Jeopardy in her original games, while both David and Arthur were basically the two players who walked so that James Holzhauer could run. As it turned out, this matchup absolutely hinged on the game’s three Daily Doubles.

Correct response: What is mercury?

There is a mineral also found in these veins of silver, which yields a humour that is always liquid, and is known as “quicksilver”. It acts as a poison upon everything…all substances float upon the surface of quicksilver, with the exception of gold, this being the only substance that it attracts to itself. Hence it is, that it is such an excellent refiner of gold…

That is a brief description of the element now known as mercury, an element that has been referred to throughout history as “quicksilver” (the “quick” in this case being the same archaic definition of “running” or “flowing” that is used in “quicksand”). Interestingly, while the term “poison” was believed to be used in Pliny’s case to refer to its ability to dissolve many things, modern science has realized that mercury poisoning is a very serious health concern.

As long as our players can make the jump from “argentum vivum” to “quicksilver” and not guess “silver” instead, I think this should be a relatively straightforward Final Jeopardy clue.

1 Comment on "Today’s Final Jeopardy – Friday, August 23, 2024"

  1. On the contrary to yesterday, I’m perfectly willing to get a FJ clue CORRECT three times!

    Final Jeopardy Postseason Record: 19R – 1W

Three more notes about the game…

    1) Ken had to retape the introductions to both Arthur’s and MacKenzie’s interview segments; he also cursed under his breath, which sent the audience into laughter.

    2) I don’t blame Arthur at all for his missing the $10,000 DD; the picture shown in-game was so small in the studio that it was near impossible to see the detail that led to the correct response. It was, to put it a certain way, bulls___.

    3) I ran into David backstage after this game as well; much like Austin (and all of the champions I met that trip), David is a class act, and I’m definitely checking out some of the competitions under the IAC (International Academic Competitions) when I get the chance. I also met David’s parents at some point during the semifinals taping, and they’re two of the nicest people I’ve ever met.

    See y’all on Monday! 🙂
