Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Landmarks) for Friday, September 27, 2024 (Season 41, Game 15):

At its dedication, Sen. John Sherman said, “Simple in form…it rises into the skies higher than any other work of human art”

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Kate Roesch, a data visualization developer from Indianapolis, Indiana
Kate Roesch on Jeopardy!
Marianne McGowan, a writing professor from Framingham, Massachusetts
Marianne McGowan on Jeopardy!
Maddie Carwile, a healthcare program coordinator from New York, New York (1-day total: $11,700)
Maddie Carwile on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

We have a new champion in Maddie Carwile, who won last night over 3-day champion David Erb and strong challenger Alex Michev, thanks to an intelligently small wager in Final Jeopardy and a Triple Stumper in Final Jeopardy. Today, she defends for the first time against Marianne McGowan and Kate Roesch.

The obelisk known as the Washington Monument was the world’s tallest structure from its opening in 1884 to the completion of the Eiffel Tower in Paris in 1889. John Sherman, who spoke at its 1884 opening, was the Senator who brought forth the resolution in the Senate in 1876 proposing that Congress direct the completion of the Monument; construction had stalled in the 1850s after the company that had originally funded the building of the obelisk ran out of money.

To me, the biggest clue in this Final is the “higher than any other work”—knowing that the Washington Monument was the tallest in the world. We’ll see today if any of the contestants pick up on it.

Double Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: American Authors; Cameos; The Natural World; Languages; It’s A Crisis!; Words That Should Rhyme)

Maddie got DD2 for $3,000—and then it took a very long time to find DD3; it was in the unexpected CAMEOS category. Kate got it, and bet for the lead with $7,000. However, it only took one clue for Maddie to take the lead back—and Maddie led by just $400 going into Final.

Kate 19 correct 7 incorrect
Marianne 9 correct 1 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 0 (0 today).

Scores going into Final:

Kate $20,200
Marianne $5,400

Marianne and Kate were correct in Final, but Maddie was not—which makes Kate your new Jeopardy champion! She’ll be back Monday to defend.

Tonight’s results:

Marianne $5,400 + $5,000 = $10,400 (What is the Washington Monument?)
Kate $20,200 + $8,000 = $28,200 (What is the Washington Monument) (1-day total: $28,200)
Maddie $20,600 – $20,000 = $600 (What is the St. Louis Arch? (Thanks J+K+K 🙂 ))

9 Comments on "Today’s Final Jeopardy – Friday, September 27, 2024"

  1. I think I remember a similar Final coming up during Juveria Zaheer’s postseason run, so this was a piece of cake 🙂

  2. My first thought was the Washington Monument, but I was not sure…but ended up correct anyway. In 1972 my brother and I took a tour of the monument and of course took the elevator up. For the way down, hours later, we ran down the stairs…and at 18 years of age…could do that. It took 45 minutes to get to the bottom and out the door!!! Whew!!!

  3. I came up with the correct respone for this Final Jeopardy. I don’t know why. I was listening to the “answer” clue reveal, and, said (what is) the Washington Monumrnt(?).
I was naturally pleased to find out I was right, ending up the week 2 for 5.
Andy, I know all categories aren’t supposed be “fastballs,” but wasn’t the “o’ Canada Province Capitals” all “hanging curveballs”-except for the Quebec (city) “answer”?

  4. I momentarily thought St. Louis Arch [mostly because of the “simple in form” but also thinking “Wouldn’t the president in office at the time have been the one to dedicate the Washington Monument?”], but I felt the “higher than any other work” better applied to the latter and reasoned that probably more than one notable spoke at the dedication, so went with “What is the Washington Monument?” for my response.

  5. BYW, there is a typo for Kate Roesch’s profession. The first ‘z’ should actually be an ‘s’.

    • OOPS! My comment about a typo had a typo itself! [So no one should try to figure out what BYW stands for.]

  6. I went with the Statue of Liberty. Oops! 1 for 5 on the week and 3 for 15 on the season.

    Have a great weekend everyone!

  7. My first thought was Washington monument, then second guessed statue of Liberty, then went back to w.m.

W.m. is 555 ft. tall, s.o.l is 305 and gateway arch is 630 ft tall – and wide. but gwa was started in 1963 and completed in 1965. Thanks Google
