Today’s Final Jeopardy – Monday, October 14, 2024

Warning: This page contains spoilers for the October 14, 2024, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that the game airs as early as noon Eastern in some U.S. television markets.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Corporate Mascots) for Monday, October 14, 2024 (Season 41, Game 26):

A 2014 tweet said that this mascot was the “embodiment of a milkshake or taste bud”

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Caryn Radick, an archivist from Kendall Park, New Jersey
Caryn Radick on Jeopardy!
Jack Swansey, a writer originally from Durham, North Carolina
Jack Swansey on Jeopardy!
Eamonn Campbell, a lawyer originally from Manchester, Vermont (1-day total: $13,700)
Eamonn Campbell on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

On what is a holiday Monday for most up north here in Canada, Jeopardy! keeps rolling along with the first episode taped after a long summer break. (The first five weeks of Season 41 were taped in May and June as a contingency against a possible IATSE strike over the summer.) Pop Culture Jeopardy was taped in the interim, and some of the set and video board changes made for the spin-off have made their way onto the main game’s set. The biggest change to the set (as teased on Inside Jeopardy) is that, for the first time in the 40-year history of the show, there are no longer 36 individual monitors to show categories and clues on; it is now a single video board. This should help contestants with minor vision issues be able to read the clues more easily; I can’t wait to see what other changes are coming today!

Unfortunately, instead of being focused on the excitement of the set changes, many Jeopardy! fans have been focusing this weekend on having to defend their preferred host, Ken Jennings, this weekend over tabloid rumors that are now flying regarding his future as host of the show. In my entire time covering the show, I have never seen Reddit react so strongly on a certain issue—to the point where the lack of Internet reaction stories is noteworthy from the perspective of “your silence is deafening on this issue.” Considering the inanity that many of these outlets normally choose to write about, it has become abundantly clear to me that the editors and owners of these various tabloids have an agenda that does not align with the best interests of the show. Every single story that comes out of these outlets now needs to be viewed from this lens.

Oh, and in the game itself: Eamonn Campbell won Friday’s game thanks to an unorthodox Final Jeopardy wager. Today, he faces off against Jack Swansey and Caryn Radick. Thankfully, Eamonn will have had a couple of months to learn Final Jeopardy betting strategy—should he choose to use it.

Correct response: Who is Grimace?

On October 30, 2014, McDonalds tweeted in response to Margo Padilla, who had asked  “What is Grimace?”, “Grimace lore says he is the embodiment of a milkshake or a taste bud. What do you think?”. Initially introduced in the 1970s, he originally was an antagonist in McDonald’s McDonaldland series who would steal milkshakes and Cokes. However, he became a protagonist very quickly.

Grimace became very much associated with the 2024 playoff run of the New York Mets after the team went on a 7-game winning streak in June after he threw out the first pitch at Citi Field on June 12. Consider that this was the first episode taped after the summer break, I think that this is definitely a fitting “current events”-tinged Final Jeopardy that will certainly play well amongst Mets fans.

Jeopardy! Round:

Today’s interviews:

Caryn plays board games with her husband; they count wins with marbles in a bowl.
Jack studied NASCAR as an undergrad.
Eamonn is a curler.

Thanks to six correct responses, and a $1,000 incorrect response from both Eamonn and Caryn, Jack jumped from third to first in the second segment of the game today.

Jack 9 correct 1 incorrect
Eamonn 10 correct 1 incorrect

Double Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: Asian Geography; The Characters They Birthed; Choose A Name; Signs & Signals; Wedding Songs; Alliteration)

In a closely-contested Double Jeopardy round, Jack got off to the best start, punctuated by DD2. Eamonn then charged back, found DD3, and fortuitously bet just $1,400 in it (as he was incorrect). This meant that Eamonn was able to keep just a $200 lead going into Final Jeopardy.

Statistics after Double Jeopardy:

Eamonn 20 correct 4 incorrect
Jack 17 correct 1 incorrect
Caryn 8 correct 1 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 1 (0 today).

Scores going into Final:

Eamonn $14,800
Jack $14,600
Caryn $4,600

Both Caryn and Eamonn were correct in Final; Eamonn went for a cover bet today and is now a 2-day champion! He’ll go for #3 tomorrow.

Tonight’s results:

Caryn $4,600 + $3,000 = $7,600 (Who is Grimace?)
Jack $14,600 – $14,599 = $1 (Who is Sonic?)
Eamonn $14,800 + $14,700 = $29,500 (Who is Grimace?) (2-day total: $43,200)

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • In terms of changes, they’re more subdued than I thought. I like the single video board, and the highlighting of the selected category coming over from Celebrity helps. Other than that, it definitely still feels like the previous set.
  • I’d love to see a “behind-the-scenes” video to see how the video board works during taping.
  • Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Eamonn $14,800 Jack $14,600 Caryn $4,600)

Eamonn: Standard cover bet over Jack is $14,401. If you really want to bet against Jack being correct, bet between $0 and $199. (Actual bet: $14,700)

Jack: I would bet between $401 and $5,399 here; this covers Eamonn’s low range and keeps Caryn locked out. (Actual bet: $14,599)

Caryn: Bet between $0 and $4,199 to stay ahead of Eamonn if Eamonn bets to cover. (Actual bet: $3,000)

12 Comments on "Today’s Final Jeopardy – Monday, October 14, 2024"

  1. Grimace was the only guess I had – since I was a child, he was the mascot for the shake – and a lot less frightening than Ronald.

  2. I had no guess for today’s clue and there was no head-slap moment when I saw the answer. I guess ole’ Grimace must have flown completely under my radar.

  3. I can’t wait to see the new set, and any other possible changes to the show, if any.

  4. I haven”t seen a “McDonaldland” ad in years. (Except for an appearance of the Hamburglar in an recent campaign.) The idea of the Mets using to inspire their playoff push, even if I’d known about it wouldn’thave helped. (As a Chicago Cubs fan, I’ve held a grudge at any thing NY Mets related since 1969.) So obviously I started the week with a loss.
Clickbait stories about Ken Jennings supposedly in trouble due to Ryan Seacrest bringing additional interest to Wheel of Fortune this year, are-as Andy at least implied, ridiculous. Why would Ken’s job as host be in trouble just because a new host on (daily) Wheel has brought higher ratings due to the curiosity factor about a new host.
As for the new game board, the coming of which I mentioned last week, so far it looks, and, acts like the old one, like Andy said. Question about the Final Jeopardy monitor, is the answer clue ever displayed on it? Shots of it while the players are coming up with their responses, always have it just showing the category. While I’m sure the Final Jeopardy answer clue is visible to the players somewhere off camera, I’d think having it on stage, like it was during the Art Fleming NYC years, and, like it was on this version, until the current set design came in, would be an aid to the players.

  5. I didn’t notice the new board until halfway through the game. I like it.

As a baseball fan (not a Mets fan), Grimace came to me quickly. As a Baltimore Orioles fan, I join Bill in holding a grudge against anything Mets related since 1969. IYKYK and I’m sure Bill knows.

  7. It never would’ve occurred to me that any character other than Ronald McDonald would be considered McDonald’s corporate mascot, but nevertheless I got this right as Grimace was the only thing I could think of that fit the rest of the clue.

    • I don’t think Grimace is THE McDonald’s corporate mascot, but rather that they have several rather than just one (which I assume would be Ronald). Not unheard of, as the Sochi Olympics had three mascots instead of one.

  8. I guessed what is the Nestlé Qwik Bunny. Wrong again! 0 for 1 on the week and now a pitiful 4 for 26 on the season. 🙄

I was at a taping on September 23rd and didn’t even notice that the board was new and the Final Jeopardy board was new either.

Retro congrats to Eamonn on win #2. Good run of multi game winners lately.

  9. I knew this only because I happened to watch a Mets playoff game last week. My friend asked me, “Don’t you remember Grimace?” While I remember the Hamburglar, Mayor McCheese, and the police officer, I had to look up Grimace and found out it was modeled after a taste bud.
