(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Rachel Cassidy, an associate professor from Providence, Rhode Island
Rachel Cassidy on Jeopardy!
Jay Eversman, an environmental attorney from St. Louis, Missouri
Jay Eversman on Jeopardy!
Rishabh Wuppalapati, an undergraduate student at the University of Pennsylvania from Vernon Hills, Illinois (1-day total: $22,201)
Rishabh Wuppalapati on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Penn student Rishabh Wuppalapati is your new Jeopardy! champion after his exciting victory last night. Today, he faces off against St. Louis’s Jay Eversman and Providence’s Rachel Cassidy. I’d be surprised if today’s game was as good as yesterday’s—I was certainly on the edge of my seat watching yesterday’s game—but I’d certainly like to see our players prove me wrong!

I think that today’s write-up is going to be slightly shorter than some of my recent ones: of the 16 schools currently in the SEC, two of them are located in cities named Columbia: the University of Missouri, located in Columbia, Missouri, and the University of South Carolina, located in Columbia, South Carolina.

I suspect our player from St. Louis today might have a geographic advantage here, but it’s hard to say; around-the-map Finals always tend to play difficult.

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • Another reminder to viewers that the judges can see Final Jeopardy being written as it’s being written. They would have seen the letters to “Columbia” written by Rishabh and ruled accordingly.
  • My advice to contestants: There is no need to speak whatsoever in the Final Jeopardy round unless Ken directly asks you a question. Let your screen stand for itself.
  • Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Rishabh $10,400 Rachel $10,100 Jay $4,800)

Rishabh: Standard cover bet over Rachel is $9,801. (Actual bet: $9,801)

Jay: Bet no more than $4,200 to stay ahead of Rishabh on a Triple Stumper. (Actual bet: $4,799)

Rachel: Bet between $301 (just in case Rishabh bets $0) and $499 (keeping Jay locked out). (Actual bet: $9,601)

  1. Being a Mizzou fan, this was a gimme. I can see someone not familiar with the conferences going with Miami since there is also a Miami of Ohio. Being that one of the contestants today is from Missouri, I think that’s an advantage for him in the final.

    • Miami University is in Oxford, Ohio. I got today’s answer but it wouldn’t have been in the 30 seconds allotted.

      • Katerina E. | October 16, 2024 at 9:29 pm |

The first city that came to mind was “Oxford” (as my parents met when they were students at Miami University, so Ole Miss is the first SEC town I think of when starting from nothing. Coincidently another MAC school, Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, shares a city name with an SEC school, University of Georgia), then Athens (see previous note), then I started in the west with Austin, Norman, and finally Columbia, and that all took about five seconds for me to work out, but I am a geographer and city names flip through my head like cards in a rolodex sometimes.

    • I was in trouble when they named the conference. Had no idea.

Not an avid college football watcher… guessed Gainesville thinking of U Florida and hoping the same named Georgia city had a football team, too.

  3. Robert J. Fawkes | October 16, 2024 at 7:11 pm |

Being familiar enough with college football thanks to DraftKings and FanDuel, I was able to come up with this one fairly quickly. Interesting that the one I thought had the best chance of getting this one right was the only one not to get it. Congratulations to Rishabh Wuppalapati (just wanted to see if I could spell all of that right) on pulling out a last second win. I think Rachel played well enough to earn a second chance; she came oh so close.

  4. I watch less college football than I watch the NFL, but I am a sports fan enough to have nailed this instantly. Bout time I got FJ right. 1 for 3 for the week and 5 for 28 in Season 41.

Retro congrats to Rishabh on win #2! He’s now our 4th straight multi-game winner.

And I concur with Robert J. Fawkes that Rachel deserves a 2nd chance. Her pub trivia team name is great as well…..4 non, non-blondes! LOL

  5. Enos Williams | October 17, 2024 at 12:18 am |

Yeah, I live in an SEC college town and still had to shuffle through all the schools before I figured it out. I managed to do it within the 30 seconds, but who knows what might have happened on stage.
