In Christian art, the Pietà (Italian for “pity”) is a depiction of the Virgin Mary supporting the body of the dead Christ. Its most famous example is Michelangelo’s sculpture, still located today in St. Peter’s Basilica. According to many sources of Catholic doctrine, the Pieta is the sixth of Mary’s “seven sorrows”.
Even to me, as someone whose art history knowledge is not that strong (as evidenced by my utter failings last Thursday), I found today’s Final Jeopardy a little bit more straightforward. I hope it plays well both in studio and at home.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:
(Scores: Tristan $14,600 Kelly $11,300 Marcus $5,700)
Kelly: Standard cover bet over Marcus is $101. If you do feel more comfortable, you can safely bet between $3,300 and $4,699 as well. (Actual bet: $500)
Marcus: You do have to be correct and make a bet of at least $900 to pass Tristan. However, Kelly may make a small bet herself—which means you probably should bet at least $5,500. (Actual bet: $2,400)
Tristan: Standard cover bet over Kelly is $8,001. (Actual bet: $8,100)

Not to mention the Pietà of Marlon Brando, Eve Marie Saint, and Karl Malden near the end of Elia Kazan’s On the Waterfront.
I am familiar with the statue that Laszlo Toth attacked. Don Novello who played Father Guido Sarducci wrote letters to famous people using the name Laszlo Toth later on. And Bob Casilla, creator of The City Museum in St Louis was one of the people who restrained Toth when he was attacking the statue. (so much for trivia, I still didn’t not get the correct answer to FJ today)
Hadn’t a clue.
I did notunderstand today’s Final jeopardy, even after the correct response was confirmed.
I know the Pieta, never understood what the word meant, just like “the Seven Sorrows of Mary” meant nothing to me, having not been raised in the Roman Catholic faith. Reading Andy’s “further information” clear it up for me. Obviously I did better in the in Consequential category.
With 11 lead changes, I found this to be an interesting game. I like those back and forth games where the outcome is in doubt throughout as opposed to never in doubt.
Having a religious background and knowledge was certainly helpful in getting today’s final.
I correctly guessed “the Pietà” as it was the ONLY Italian name/title of a “Mary pose” that I was aware of. I think I was actually aware of more than one version, but not enough so that I was consciously aware there were more than one (making it the name of a theme instead of [or as much as] a title), but it seemed reasonable that there could be many, so I went for it since I could think of no other possibilities. [I did all that in plenty of time, but I was sure that thinking longer would not dredge up any other possibilities as I have had only minimal Art History and, as Bill said, not being Roman Catholic.]
I came up with Pieta after a short thought; likely thanks to having visited Rome/Vatican/St. Peter’s. I would not be able to name any other sorrow of Mary.
Very nicely done both of ya’s!
I had zero idea (common)…. 0 for 1 on the week and 5 for 31 in this Season 41.
Retro congrats on that win Tristan! That was a very fun, back and forth game.
I wonder if more people (on air and comment-ers) might have gotten this FJ if it had come up during Easter Season rather than in the Fall.
That’s possible Lisa, but it wouldn’t have helped me I am guessing. 🙂
