Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Men of War) for Monday, February 10, 2025 (Season 41, Game 111):
Robert E. Lee’s victory at Chancellorsville has been likened to this Greek’s victory at Asculum in 279 B.C.

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
It’s time for a new week of Jeopardy episodes, as I report this morning from a snowy St. John’s, where winter has finally arrived—we received about 15″ (38cm) of snow overnight.
Today sees Game 2 of the first-to-3-wins Tournament of Champions final, as Adriana took first blood on Friday with a savvy wager in Final Jeopardy. Isaac Hirsch and Neilesh Vinjamuri will be looking to rebound, while Adriana will be looking for a second victory. Adriana’s first victory has turned her into the favorite to win, as per the newly-unveiled Unified Prediction Model; after all, it’s much easier to win two games than it is three.
I mentioned last week that I didn’t think there would be much disruption to the distribution of Jeopardy! from a viewer perspective in the ongoing legal battle between producer Sony and distributor CBS Media Ventures. I still don’t think so, though I do believe that there is a higher-than-normal chance in the coming days that the confusion will cause a local station to accidentally play an incorrect episode.
Another important thing today is the unveiling of the field of the 2nd Jeopardy! Invitational Tournament on the Inside Jeopardy podcast, JIT #2 is set to commence immediately following this ToC final. It’s also important to remember that there is no guarantee that every player invited by the show elected to accept the show’s invitation; many players who might have otherwise competed may have decided that their life is not in an appropriate place for them to properly prepare for an appearance.

Taking place from April 30–May 6, 1863, Chancellorsville was a major battle of the Civil War. While the battle itself generally went well for the Confederacy, it has now been seen as a “Pyrrhic victory”, as major Confederate general Stonewall Jackson was mortally wounded by friendly fire; Confederate soldiers mistook the general and his staff for Union cavalry.
The term “Pyrrhic victory” originates from the Battle of Asculum that took place in southeastern Italy in 279 B.C., where the forces of Pyrrhus of Epirus technically won the battle, but it was later related by Plutarch that when Pyrrhus received congratulations for his victory, he said “one other such victory would utterly undo him.” According to Plutarch, “he had lost a great part of his forces he brought with him, and almost all his particular friends and and principal commanders”.

Remembered this from high school Latin class. Should be a triple-get.
Lately, triple gets are hard to come by. I should brush up on my history however…
I can still hear Mr. Wise in Junior High School History class explaining what a Pyrrhic victory means and using both the original and Chancellorsville as examples. Thanks to Mr. Wise, I was able to get this one easily.
I did know about “Pyrrhic victories”, but I am pretty sure that I learned of it in college history class and I didn’t take any college classes that would have had ‘War Between the States’ history in it (as I was sick of it by then), so I don’t think I ever knew that about Chancellorsville.
I kind of doubt my high school (or Jr. High) teachers were educated well enough to even know that term or origin and I bet here in the south (in my day) the history books had to include Rebel defeats, but omitted any negatives about Rebel wins. No tellin’ what U.S. History books have in them now, especially here in the South.
Thank you so much for taking the time to create this on a daily basis. I missed the interviews and was curious what it was about. So happy to be able to find it here. Excited about JIT, too. Thanks for the heads up.
I didn’t know FJ, but that’s pretty common for me in a TOC.
Great guts by Neilesh on the DD’s and a great comeback by Isaac to prevent the Runaway.
This was great Jeopardy and off to Game 3 we go tomorrow! Looking forward to it!
In today’s coincidence, I just happened to read the chapter in Jeff Shaara’s “Gods and Generals” where Stonewall Jackson gets shot… after watching today’s episode. I might’ve been able to make the necessary connection to get FJ correct had I managed to get to it sooner.
