Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
The second part of tonight’s Jeopardy! Masters episodes features the winners of our first three games—Yogesh Raut, Roger Craig, and the winner of the first half of tonight’s episode. As nobody on the “outside” has been told whether scores reset between the knockouts and the quarterfinals—which, quite frankly, is not how any operation purporting to be a sporting competition should operate—the viewers do not know what exactly there is to play for in this half of the episode. That said, I do expect to see a relatively spirited performance between our three players.
While Ken did announce at the start of this game that points do carry forward to the quarterfinals from this round, this absolutely should have been made clear to everyone in advance.

this absolutely should have been made clear to everyone in advance
Please tell the class what difference would it have made.
No sports league in existence waits to announce its conditions of play to the fans until after the competition has started.
Michael Davies has said numerous times that he wants Jeopardy! to be seen as a sport.
Shrouding the format in secrecy to the fans—the people you actually want to tune in and watch—is antithetical to being a sport.
As far as the withheld details of the format do not cause fans to be confused by the behavior of the players (and it did not for the first 3 games), I do not consider this an issue.
Not knowing the details of the format has greatly hampered my enjoyment of this event.
I was stunned when I heard Ken’s announcement. I think it’s a great idea, but it should have clearly been stated on Jeopardy’s website/rules page for this event. I agree with you 100% Andy.
I also agree with Andy, but probably not with Jeff — i.e., it depends on EXACTLY when (or EVER) the points reset, which I am still not clear on. But am I correct in assuming that the points being discussed are the ones awarded each time a player comes in first or second, not the “points” (that in daily play are dollars) that they accumulate through regular play and wagering?
BTW, personally I don’t even like the idea of Jeopardy! being considered a sport (nor Poker for that matter). Is Scrabble a sport? Is Wordle a sport? But, anyway, if one wants interested observers for a game, the rules need to be known in advance to them, too, not just to the players. But Michael Davies insisting Jeopardy! is a sport and him making up the rules AND him not announcing the rules to the viewing audience in advance is just stupid. My guess is that it was not a calculated decision, they just forgot to announce it and won’t own up to that. [And perhaps the tight editing to get ALL the clues played added to the omission.]
From what I understand of the rules, the 3 contestants with 1 point will face each other and the 3 contestants with no points will face each other on the next episode. The 3 original winners (they played in last night’s second game) will advance to the next round. The 2 contestants with no points who fail to win the second game will be eliminated (third place finisher will have 0 cumulative points and second place finisher will have 1 cumulative point). And the contestant who finishes 3rd in the game between the 1-point contestants will also be eliminated (also having one cumulative point).
Is that correct? If so, I would expect Victoria and Matt to advance. As well as Neilesh. But have to wait until they play the games as they say (even though in this case they have already played the games (I think)–we just don’t know the results).
Those are the contestants for Game 5 and 6 as verified by Jeopardy.
This entire tournament has been completely played. Matter in fact, the last shows for this season are being taped in about 10 minutes.
I surprised myself by getting way more of the Hymns & Spirituals category than the players did. The only one I missed was the low-value ‘Rock of Ages’ and I had trouble hearing enough of it (which I am very familiar with) to identify it. I wonder if it was edited a bit too tightly and the players could actually hear more than I could. Maybe not, though, as I believe I remember correctly that it was a triple stumper.
I do not have a particularly high percentage on getting FJ!s correct, but usually I have some idea that’s “in the neighborhood” or I know exactly who the clue is about [like remembering a lot of other things about them that is not in the clue] but cannot think of their name. Or at least when the correct response is revealed it is someone or some thing that I HAVE heard of (and maybe even know other things about but just didn’t know about the particular facts in the clue). However, I am certain that I have NEVER heard of Berthe Morisot, nor “Hide & Seek”, nor “The Cradle”, nor Blvd. Des Capucines.
