Today’s Final Jeopardy – Friday, June 27, 2025

Warning: This page contains spoilers for the June 27, 2025, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that the game airs as early as noon Eastern in some U.S. television markets.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Europe) for Friday, June 27, 2025 (Season 41, Game 210):

The EU has 5 metropolitan regions of more than 5 million people; this city is the only one on the Mediterranean

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Michelle Arguelles, a product marketing manager from Oakland, California
Michelle Arguelles on Jeopardy!
Klay Frappier, an accountant originally from McHenry, North Dakota
Klay Frappier on Jeopardy!
Rocco Graziano, a substitute teacher from Staten Island, New York (1-day total: $17,200)
Rocco Graziano on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

It’s been two weeks now since a multi-day champion has graced the champion’s lectern on the Alex Trebek Stage; will Rocco Graziano end the run of one-day champions? Certainly, Klay Frappier and Michelle Arguelles want to keep the carousel moving!

That being said: we still aren’t at the record in terms of consecutive one-day champions—we had long runs of 1-day winners in 2002 and in 2009, which tells me that it has nothing to do with how the show is being written (as much as some people want to use this as a cudgel to bash the writers), it just happens to be one of those things that comes along sometimes on Jeopardy! and is a result of the inherent variance that have made the show such an entertaining television property over the past 60 years.

As the clue says: there are 5 metro areas in the EU with more than 5 million people: Paris, Madrid, Ruhr (Dortmund/Essen/Duisberg, Germany), Barcelona, and Milan, with Barcelona being the only one of those five cities on the Mediterranean. The other two cities I considered on this Final were Rome and Athens—both of these cities have just 3.6 million people.

In my experience watching the show, European geography clues always generally tend to play harder than I expect them to; which means, at this point, we’ll probably see at least two guess of Rome and Athens.

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • If you fail to phrase in the form of a question in Double Jeopardy, you risk being ruled incorrect at any point. Of course, there will be some fans who will use this ruling as a springboard for another batch of clickbait criticism of our host. Could we have just one day where everyone says positive things about Ken?
  • Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Klay $12,000 Michelle $10,000 Rocco $8,000)

Rocco: Just wager $4,000. Seriously—it’ll bring you to Klay’s score, and on a Triple Stumper, you’ll stay $1 above Klay and Michelle’s cover bets. (Actual bet: $6,000)

Klay: Standard cover bet over Michelle is $8,001. (Actual bet: $8,001)

Michelle: Standard cover bet is $6,001. You should bet exactly this number, because if you and Klay both make your respective cover bets and are incorrect, you both fall to exactly $3,999. (Actual bet: $8,000)

14 Comments on "Today’s Final Jeopardy – Friday, June 27, 2025"

  1. I went with Nice guessing it was much too small. I didn’t know Barcelona is on the Mediterranean.

  2. I “knew” that Rome, Paris, Madrid, and Barcelona were four of them. Three of them are sufficiently inland that I discarded them. I did not realize Milan is bigger than Rome — not that it mattered, because Milan is hosting the Winter Games and therefore I figured (rightly) it was in the Alpine region.

I did not think of Ruhr (or as I jokingly considered it, 12 cities in a trenchcoat) in time, and for me the question was “Did Turkiye ever join the EU?” If they did, it’s Istanbul. But since I couldn’t remember, I figured it better to go down swinging with Barca than with Istanbul.

(Humorously, one of the things I considered is that Turkiye was desperate to join Europe, so I figured NATO hadn’t accepted them and therefore neither did the EU. NATO had. But hey, you play long enough and you’re allowed to be right for the wrong reasons.)

    • All that matters is being correct, but just wanted to mention that the alpine portion of the winter games are being held in Cortina not Milan. And have you seen the comic with 58 weasels in a trench coat.

      • I have now LOL! And let’s just say the same description has been applied to the US (fifty-something nations in a trenchcoat).

Although Istanbul isn’t on the Mediterranean, it’s on the Black Sea, so Turkiye being in the EU wouldn’t have mattered for the clue, and not remembering that saved you from going with an incorrect answer. 🙂

  3. I had no idea that the Barcelona region was that large. After initially considering the Cote d’Azur, I went with Naples (whose region has only 4.4 million people, as it turns out). Close, but no cigar.

    • I also went with Naples, because I did not realize that Rome and Athens ARE on the Mediterranean, not because I did not realize they weren’t big enough. I did realize that Venice is not big enough but had no idea about the size of Naples’ metropolitan region.

An up-and-down week for FJ finished more down than up for me as I got it wrong for the second straight day.

I had Barcelona, Nice, and Athens as three options in my mind. I didn’t think Nice was that large, though wondered exactly how extensive its metropolitan area would be considered to be. I was pretty sure that Barcelona was on the cost, but wasn’t 100% certain on that. I knew that I’d learned at some point that Athens had a pretty large metropolitan population, and I knew it was on the coast, so like Michelle I went with Athens. Sometimes you can’t win every coin toss, and you have to take some lumps.

  5. Crazy stuff:

Rocco was in third place by the very $2,000 he lost because he failed to phrase in the form of a question once, and Klay was in first by the very $2,000 he got on the rebound. Yes, I know both DDs are still on the board when this happens, so it’s not a perfect What If, but man…

  6. Ken Jennings is an excellent host for the show, a worthy successor to his good friend Alex Trebek. 🙂

    • Absolutely! I have been to 4 tapings and Ken is the consummate Pro. He and I had a fun exchange after the final of our 3 tapings that day. He jokingly asked if the crowd wished that they were at a Wheel taping instead. I put my hand up and did a thumbs down and he saw me do it and did the same and said thank you. 🙂

Here’s a follow-up to something that was discussed yesterday. Someone posted that it was unlikely that Rocco Graziano could be related to the boxer Rocky Graziano because the fighter’s real last name was Barbella. While it is true that Rocky Graziano’s last name was originally Barbella, his grandfather’s surname was Graziano. Rocky Graziano fought under his grandfather’s surname during his professional boxing career. That means it is possible that yesterday’s champion, Rocco Graziano, is related to Rocky Graziano. Maybe, if he had continued long enough on the show, the topic would have come up so we could have gotten a definitive answer instead of just speculation one way or the other. Given that the boxer’s middle name was also Rocco and his grandfather’s surname was Graziano, it does seem as though there may be some relationship despite different last names.

Another case of being right for the wrong reasons: I knew that Rome metro bordered the Med, but I thought the city proper didn’t and was therefore excluded by the second clause. This would have been correct in ancient times when the port of Ostia was separate city, but not today. I thought the population of Rome metro would’ve easily cleared 5 million, and would’ve put it down if I knew the city proper included Ostia. I didn’t, so I went with Barcelona.

As an aside, does anyone have a definitive source for the population of metro Berlin? I’ve found estimates ranging from 4.7 to 6.3 million, but just on Wikipedia with broken reference links.

  9. It took me about half of Think to come with Barcelona and I was pretty confident in that guess. 🙂 worked well!

This run of 1 day winners is quite amazing to me.

Have a great weekend everyone and we’ll see what happens on Monday! 20 more shows of Jeopardy in the season.
