Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category World Capitals) for Monday, July 28, 2025 (Season 41, Game 101):
Home to more than 400,000, it’s the only world capital in the “Roaring Forties” latitudes

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
After a stunning season finale on Friday that saw 16-day champion Scott Riccardi defeated, the show’s six weeks of encore presentations begin tonight with a reairing of the 2025 Tournament of Champions. Tonight’s opening quarterfinal saw Alison Betts, Will Wallace, and Rishaba Wuppalapti do battle.
Why isn’t Jeopardy! new tonight?
Jeopardy! has always run encore presentations (reruns) during the summer months, as traditionally, fewer people watch television as a whole during the summer. Thus, it isn’t as financially viable to produce new episodes to air at this time. Additionally, the ability to run the major tournaments again as encore presentations during the summer increases the financial viability of these major events (due to being able to get a second set of advertising revenues).
Thankfully, Jeopardy! fans can rest easy in knowing that the show has, since 1987, set out to air 46 weeks of original programming a season, an amount that is the longest season of any North American game show.
When will Jonathan Hugendubler defend his title?
Jonathan Hugendubler, who defeated Scott Riccardi on Friday, July 25, will return to defend his title at the start of Season 42 on September 8. Meanwhile, barring another incredibly strong player in the fall of 2025, Scott will be the favorite to take victory in the 2026 Tournament of Champions next winter.

Correct response: What is Wellington, New Zealand?
More information about Final Jeopardy:
(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2025 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)
With a metro area population of over 400,000, Wellington, the capital of New Zealand, is the world’s southernmost capital city. It should also come as no surprise by its position in the “Roaring Forties”—the high-wind latitudes in the southern hemisphere—that it is the windiest city in the world. (Something tells me that I would probably feel at home there, being that I currently live in one of the other windiest cities in the world in St. John’s, Newfoundland.)
The “Roaring Forties” have higher winds compared to the northern hemisphere at that latitude because there are significantly fewer land masses in the southern hemisphere between 40º and 50º south to act as a windbreak. The route’s suitability for quick sailing to the Dutch East Indies was discovered by the Dutch in the early 17th century and named the Brouwer Route.
The key to getting this clue correct is remembering that “Roaring Forties” is a term exclusively used to refer to winds in the southern hemisphere; from there, picking the southernmost capital should be—if you’ll pardon the meteorological pun—a breeze.

Once again, how prescient, considering how a certain world leader just made comments yesterday about how bad “green energy” is, and that birds and whales hate windmills. I guess he speaks for the whales now too! Sheesh!!
Andy!
Thanks for the answers to the questions on my mind!!
Take care, Rick
I have interacted with Alison quite a few times over Discord since her initial run, and I’m being completely sincere when I say this – she is without question one of the nicest people to have ever stepped foot on the Alex Trebek Stage. I genuinely cannot say enough good things about her, and while it’s a shame that the ToC didn’t work out, it’s always very nice to see when great Jeopardy players – such as Alison – are amazing human beings on top of that. 🙂
