Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Medical History) for Monday, January 12, 2026 (Season 42, Game 91):

The viral rash known since 1866 by this Latin name was described a century earlier by Friedrich Hoffman of the University of Halle

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Cameron Berry, a data analyst & college administrator from Brighton, Massachusetts
Cameron Berry on Jeopardy!
Vickie Talvola, a quantitative trader from Jersey City, New Jersey
Vickie Talvola on Jeopardy!
Ryan Sharpe, a recent graduate from Oakville, Ontario, Canada
Ryan Sharpe on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

The number of people who can win the 33rd Jeopardy! Tournament of Champions is now at 29. 9 of those players play this week to finalize the ToC field at 21, and of those 9, your first three semifinalists are Ryan Sharpe, Vickie Talvola, and Cameron Berry. I would not be surprised if today’s game was the best game of the entire tournament; all three of these players are incredibly strong players and very good at playing Jeopardy.

I somehow doubt that I’m going to be the only person making this comment today, but this is the second time in less than two weeks that “Medical History” has been the Final Jeopardy category. The ironic thing as well is that Ryan Sharpe was also in the game the last time this category was used. Honestly—assuming, of course, that there was not a last-minute change that made it into the game but not the show’s clue database—I wish that the show had decided that not enough time had elapsed since this exact category name was used in Final and chosen to rename it.

Also known as German measles because it was first described by Hoffman, a German, as well as other German physicians, rubella was given its Latin name (it meant “little red” in Latin) by Henry Veale in 1866, when an outbreak in India was being described. Vaccines available since the 1970s have been very effective in controlling outbreaks, which used to occur every few years in North America.

I’m very curious to see how this Final Jeopardy clue plays; the path is certainly there for anyone who is able to remember that rubella is a viral rash and is also known as German measles.

Game Recap:

In a main game that saw only four Triple Stumpers, no incorrect responses, and a pair of big True Daily Doubles, our three players combined for $67,000 entering Final Jeopardy.

Cameron, who was leading entering Final, was the only player correct on Clue #61, making him a finalist.

Scores going into Final:

Cameron $27,200
Ryan $24,000
Vickie $15,800

Tonight’s results:

Vickie $15,800 – $9,400 = $6,400 (What rosacea?)
Ryan $24,000 – $7,601 = $16,399 (What is variola?)
Cameron $27,200 + $4,401 = $31,601 (What is Rubella) (Finalist)

Andy’s Thoughts:

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Cameron $27,200 Ryan $24,000 Vickie $15,800)

Ryan: Standard cover bet over Vickie is $7,601. (Actual bet: $7,601)

Vickie: Bet between $601 and $9,399 (the former to pass Ryan if he covers and is incorrect, the latter in case Cameron makes a cover bet. (Actual bet: $9,400)

Cameron: Standard cover bet is $20,801. If you really want to play for the Triple Stumper, bet no more that $2,799. Or, if you are absolutely certain that Ryan will just bet $7,601, then bet $4,402. (Actual bet: $4,401)
