One recent Coryat, the weekend’s rerun. Originally 9-19-11: 23600 (29400 without negs). It looks like the first time this episode aired, guest blogger Brandon was covering while I was in Germany for a couple of weeks. If I kept track of my score later I don’t find a record of it, but I do remember this episode. And it brought back memories today – When I taped Jeopardy!, the episodes on TV still had Mr. Trebek sitting at his lectern for contestant interviews. So we were thrilled when the Jeopardy! staff told us he was back on his feet for those.
Here are today’s contestants:

Rob Groves of Los Angeles CA |

Lars Medley of Salt Lake City UT |
![]() |
Lauren Girard of Los Angeles CA |
Rob‘s going for his third win today. At the first break, he had 2200. He’d gotten 3 right and one wrong. Lauren led with 3000. She’d gotten 5 right. And Lars had gotten 6 right and 2 wrong, and had 1200.
Mr. Trebek said “[M]any of our contestants on Jeopardy! are collectors….” He said it was “deja vu,” since Joshua said yesterday he collected toy cars. (Lars collects vinyl LPs.) Surely Mr. Trebek knows that the Jeopardy! staff ask if contestants collect anything, for interview material!
Which U.S. Cabinet Department? would normally be a weak spot for me, but I got this tweeted clue right. Look what happened after I responded! What a pleasant surprise! Another little surprise: I got this triple-stumper in the category: “The Transportation Security Administration.” And Lars and Rob negged on it! Lars found the Daily Double in the same category. He’d gotten 2 right and the one wrong since the break, and had 2600. Lauren still had 3000, and Rob had gotten 4 right and 2 wrong and had 3200. There were 6 clues after this one in the round. Lars wagered 1400 on this clue: “The Food Safety & Inspection Service.” Lars got it wrong. And he got this one wrong too before the round was over, in Retired: “In 2012 this American ended his pro tennis career at the U.S. Open, which he’d won in 2003.” Now it just me? Sure I’m a tennis fan, but Pete? Sampras? Lauren got this one right.
At the end of the round, Lars had gotten the one wrong since his Daily Double and had 800. Lauren had the one right and had 3400. Rob got 4 more right and had 6200.
I got this one right in Biblical Jealousy but took it back: “Jewish leaders from Antioch persuaded the people to expel this apostle & Barnabas from the city.” And it was a triple-stumper! 🙁 The next clue was the Daily Double, in the same category. Rob had gotten 2 right in the round and had 7400. Lars and Lauren had not responded yet. Rob wagered 2000 on this clue: “King Saul was displeased when the women of Israel praised this man’s battlefield prowess over his own.” Rob got it right. Mr. Trebek said, “You do quite well when you guess!” Apparently not two clues later, in Musical Legends: Born & Died. He said “Whitney Houston” in response to this clue: “Born 1958 in Gary, Indiana; died 2009 in Los Angeles.” 2009?
I knew this next clue anyway (same category), but look, I just talked about this in my other blog: “Martha was jealous that this sister got to listen to Jesus while Martha made preparations.”
Lauren found the next Daily Double, in Music Legends: Born & Died. She’d gotten 2 right since Rob’s Daily Double, and had 5000. Rob had gotten the one wrong and had 9000. Lars had gotten 2 right and had 3600. Lauren wagered 3000 on this no-brainer: “Born 1967 in Hoquiam, Washington; died 1994 in Seattle.” She got it.
When I saw The King’s English in the Jeopardy round, I knew there had to be a reason it wasn’t The Queen’s English. I found out when the Double Jeopardy categories were read. (The Queens English) And since there was no apostrophe, I knew what “Queens” meant. In fact I anticipated seeing a clue about this guy:
![]() |
“This guy – this guy grew up in Queens and won the big event in the borough 4 times.” |
Mr. Trebek gave the less-than-a-minute warning with 5 clues left, but we saw them all. Rob got 3 wrong and 6 right, and ended the round with 12200. Lauren had gotten 6 right and had 14400. Lars got 5 right and had 9600. Pretty close game!
The Final Jeopardy category was Literary Title Places. This is the clue: “An 1831 novel says that Charlemagne laid the first stone of this title place, ‘Old Queen of Our Cathedrals.” I got this one easily and I’m not surprised all three contestants got it too. So the wagers? Lars added 6401. Rob added 7001, and Lauren added 10000. So we’ll see her tomorrow! I really thought I’d be updating the ToC list today. At least Rob will probably get a car. My Coryat today was 21000, like yesterday (22400 without negs).
