Andy here. The teens are done, and now it’s onto Power Players week; the show is still in Washington!
Today’s Power Players:
Former White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs, CNN aviation & regulation correspondent Lizzie O’Leary, and Hardball! host Chris Matthews.
J! round categories: HARDBALL, NEW YORK TIMES CROSSWORD CLUES “E”, SECRETARY’S DAY (name the Cabinet post), MY WEEK WITH MARYLAND, YOGA, PRESS BRIEFING
Chris saw both Daily Doubles uncovered in this game, the first one on the 4th clue, SECRETARY’S DAY $800. With $1000 (and Robert ($200), he bet $500 and saw the following: Dean Acheson. His correct response put him at $1500.
It annoyed me slightly to see the audience want to applaud each correct response. Did they get an audience that had never seen the show before? I suspect that they told the audience to pipe down a bit after the first break.
After the J! round, your scores: Robert $4,400 Lizzie $3,600 Chris $3,900
DJ! round categories: “POWER” PLAYERS, LAW & ORDER, 6-LETTER WORLD CAPITALS, MILITARY OPERATIONS, COMPOSERS, ACT LIKE A JOURNALIST
I was quite happy with Lizzie’s speed. Not so much with Robert or Chris, but when Lizzie got on her roll in Double Jeopardy!, it felt like a normal game!
While a bunch of clues were left in the Jeopardy! round (8, I believe…), I was pleased to see a very normally-paced second half of the game.
Chris got to the first Daily Double, on the 27th clue of the round, under COMPOSERS $1600. He only had $2,300, though, to Robert’s $12,800 and Lizzie’s $14,000. He did bet everything and saw/heard the following: Put on your cap & gown & name this Edward Elgar composition. While I don’t think I have the ability to embed music, Chris was able to give one of the names of the piece that was played, thus your scores going into FJ (as the end-of-round signal followed immediately):
Chris 4600
Robert 12800
Lizzie 14000
FJ Category: AWARDS
Clue: This performer is the only person to win an Emmy, the Mark Twain Prize, & the Spingarn Medal
Chris $4600 – 2300 = 2300
Robert 12800 – 7200 = 5600
Lizzie 14000 – 9800 = 4200
That means that Robert’s charity, the Pine Hills Literacy Project, will get $50,000! Lizzie’s (826DC) and Chris’ (Lasalle College High School) will get $10,000 apiece.
Tomorrow’s contestants: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Dana Perino, and David Faber!
(Andy: I went for Levar Burton. Kicking myself afterwards, though. Overall, the show was better than I expected, and I was pleased with the difficulty of the Final!)
