Good morning! Andy here with a double recap of Thursday and Friday!
In other news, I’m running a fantasy baseball league — with a twist! You pick players that you think will do the worst (total bases count against you, outs, strikeouts, GDPs, errors, etc. will count for you) and still earn playing time! Let me know if you’d like to join!
Rebecca Rider and Brian Daner are the challengers for Tom Carroll, who won $32,000 on Wednesday!
J! round categories:
BASED ON THE COMIC BOOK
STATES THAT BORDER CANADA
DRINKS
FATHER FIGURES
ON THE MONEY
TREE HOMOPHONES
Tom started out wih getting the first four clues in FATHER FIGURES, but Rebecca got herself back in the game! An interesting clue that required an explanation, in STATES THAT BORDER CANADA $400: This state’s Erie county has a 42-mile border with Canada; don’t try to drive across it. The show originally negged Tom’s response of “New York”, but it turns out that New York’s Erie County has about 42 miles of coastline as well — just like Pennsylvania’s! Thus, at the end of 15, the scores sat at:
Rebecca $3,200
Tom $3,000
Brian $1,400
Rebecca’s honeymoon saw her cross the United States on a train! She was very gushy about the trip!
Brian got to play the first Daily Double, under ON THE MONEY $800! Scores were:
Rebecca $5,600
Tom $2,800
Brian $2,400
Brian immediately made it a True Daily Double! His clue: Australia’s $2 coin depicts an aboriginal tribal elder set against the background of native grass trees and this constellation. His immediate correct response put him at $4,800!
We didn’t quite get finished with DRINKS, but by the end of 29 clues, the scores sat at:
Rebecca $6,000
Brian $4,800
Tom $3,200
DJ! round categories:
THE WRITE OF SPRING
MOONS
MEMPHIS MUSIC HALL OF FAME
4 LETTERS, 2 Ns
THE UNITED STATES MARINES
I LOVE THE CORE
After going through 4 LETTERS, 2 Ns, Rebecca played the first Daily Double under THE UNITED STATES MARINES $1200! Scores were:
Rebecca $10,800
Brian $7,200
Tom $3,200
Rebecca bet $3,200. Her clue: The corps is usually at the vanguard in wartime, & one of its mottos is “first to” do this. Rebecca said “advance” and fell to $7,600.
Rebecca got her score back quickly following this neg up to $12,400. She didn’t ring in at all for about 10 or 11 clues though! That got Tom and Brian back into the game! It was quite close by the time the final Daily Double came around, on the round’s penultimate clue! The scores were:
Rebecca $14,800
Brian $11,200
Tom $10,400
With one $2,000 clue left on the board, Rebecca really shouldn’t bet more than $1,599 on this Daily Double. However, she nearly made a fatal mistake by betting $2,000. Her clue: “It was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair” is from the famous opening line of this novel. Her correct response saved her folly, though, and she improved to $16,800.
Tom got the final $2,000 clue, meaning that the scores going into Final were:
Rebecca $16,800
Tom $12,400
Brian $11,200
FJ! category: BUSINESS
FJ! clue: In 1972 this company bought its first ship, the Empress of Canada, & renamed it the Mardi Gras
Brian 11200 + 11195 = 22395
Tom 12400 + 12399 = 24799
Rebecca 16800 + 8800 = 25600
Onto the second half of the double-header, Friday’s game!
Michael Carvaines and Joan Kossack are the challengers for Rebecca Rider!
J! round categories:
LOGOMANIA
WORLD CITIES
CONSTELLATION TRANSLATION
“BLACK” OR “WHITE”
A PERSON, PLACE & THING
IN A MUSICAL MOOD
Rebecca did well in both CONSTELLATION TRANSLATION and “BLACK” OR “WHITE”. However, Michael got to play the Daily Double in WORLD CITIES $600! Scores:
Rebecca $4,000
Michael $1,800
Joan $0
Michael went for the True Daily Double! His clue: This capital of Australia’s Northern Territory lies on Beagle Gulf. After a brief pause, Michael gave the correct response to put his score at $3,600!
Take a look at this! A “new” member of the Clue Crew!
By the end of 15 clues, our scores were:
Rebecca $4,200
Michael $3,600
Joan $800
Rebecca’s husband auditioned for Millionaire — he didn’t pass!
Coming out of the break, there were a few negs keeping the scores down! I enjoyed A PERSON, PLACE & THING as a category – here’s the $800 clue as an example: A modern rock piano-playing chanteuse, a “Valley” north of San Bernardino, a fruit
By the end of the round, the scores were:
Michael $6,400
Rebecca $5,800
Joan $2,200
DJ! round categories:
BRITISH LITERARY QUOTES
WHAT’S YOUR BAILEY-WICK?
NATIONS’ LEADERS IN 1900
GEMS
WORD ORIGINS
WORKING WITH PLATO
BAILEY-WICK was people named Bailey and what they do! Rebecca seemed to be the only one not taking too many negs, and her score kept going higher!
The first Daily Double was at GEMS $2,000 and it was the bane of Andy Saunders – a video! Scores were:
Rebecca $16,200
Joan $8,200
Michael $3,600
Rebecca bet $6,000! Her clue: The red spots of jasper give this mineral its name. Rebecca gave “carborundum” and fell to $10,200 – giving Joan and Michael an opening!
The final Daily Double was in PLATO and it was Michael’s to play! He had made quite a run to build his score! The scores were:
Rebecca $11,800
Michael $10,000
Joan $7,800
Just like yesterday, there was a $2,000 clue to play!
If I’m Michael, I’m betting $3,900. Michael bet just $2,000. His clue: In 529 A.D., almost 1,000 years after it was created by Plato, this school was closed by Justinian I. He went for “the Lyceum” and fell to $8,000.
Joan got the final $2,000 clue, leading to scores going into Final of:
Rebecca $11,800
Joan $9,800
Michael $8,000
FJ! category: PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS
FJ! clue: Since 1850, 1 of the 2 Republicans to appear on a ticket at President or Vice President 3 elections in a row
Michael 8000 – 7900 = 100
Joan 9800 + 7000 = 16800
Rebecca 11800 + 9000 = 20800
Sadly, if Michael had ever listened to the Animaniac’s Presidents song, he’d know “Grover Cleveland, really fat / elected twice as a Democrat”…
I still feel as though Rebecca is pulling random numbers out of thin air on her bets. I fear this will come back to haunt her! She’s a 2-day champ, $46,400!
I’ll be back Monday with my next recap!
