Good morning! Andy here with another recap! I’m off to Montreal this weekend for the qualifier for the Canadian National Scrabble Championship; it should be a fun trip!
The Canadian version of SportsCentre’s weekday hosts, Jay Onrait and Dan O’Toole, often refer to various NHL players as “fans of the show”; those players often get shoutouts from Onrait & O’Toole during the sportscast!
George McAleese and Amanda Steadman are the two challengers for Andy Hermann! Amanda’s Canadian, and George is a “fan of the show” (by “the show”, I’m referring to the blog, in this case!) — am I allowed to cheer for a 3-way tie?
J! round categories:
NOAH’S ARC
GREEN WITH NON-ENVY
HOME LAND
PUT YOUR MONEY WHERE YOUR MOUTH IS
LET’S GOLF
HERE’S YOUR T OFF TIME
PUT YOUR MONEY WHERE YOUR MOUTH IS was a fun category – it was about expensive food menu items! The early clues in HOME LAND were a struggle, as the contestants kept giving city and not country names! Early nerves, I bet! Amanda played the first Daily Double, under HOME LAND $800. Scores were:
Andy $2,400
George $2,200
Amanda $200
Amanda bet $1,000. Her clue: The warriors seen here. Her correct response put her at $1,200 and the game at its first break!
Under the theme of “contestant wedding”, Andy’s story today was that he got married at the zoo! The Icelandic volcano kept Amanda in Europe for an extra four days on her “trip of a lifetime” to Italy!
Coming out of the break, it was mostly George and Andy, with the minute-to-go signal coming with 7 clues left! We only got through 4 of them before the end-of-round beeping happened (George took HERE’S YOUR T OFF TIME from bottom to top)! Scores were:
Andy $4,400
George $4,000
Amanda $1,000
DJ! round categories:
THE CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA
LITERARY SECOND BANANAS
ACTORS WHO SING
WHAT’S YOUR TECHNIQUE?
THE FAST & THE FURRIEST
OUT ON A “LIM”
LITERARY SECOND BANANAS $1600 had the first Daily Double, and Andy got to play it! (it was the fourth clue of the round.) Scores were:
Andy $6,400
George $4,000
Amanda $1,400
Andy bet $2,000. His clue: In the “Iliad”, Patroclus is the bosom companion of this fierce Greek warrior. Andy went for Ajax, and fell to $4,400.
George and Amanda both had good luck in CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA, and Andy got some money back in ACTORS WHO SING and THE FAST & THE FURRIEST. Amanda got ACTORS WHO SING for $2000, though, went back to THE FAST & THE FURRIEST $1600, and found the final Daily Double! The scores were:
George $12,000
Andy $8,400
Amanda $5,800
I think I’d be one of those types screaming “bet it all! bet it all!” to Amanda; she just bet $3,000, though. Her clue: Check out the grace of a Thomson’s type of this type of antelope, but do it quickly; it can hit 50 miles per hour. Her correct response put her at $8,800 and Andy into third place.
All 3 players did well for themselves over the final two categories (even though George only got 2 answers, one was for $2,000!). Scores going into Final!:
George $14,800
Andy $13,600
Amanda $11,200
FJ! category: TV SPIN-OFFS
FJ! clue: Premiering in 1992, this show lasted 11 seasons, like its predecessor show; the 2 were set nearly 2,500 miles apart
Amanda 11200 + 5000 = 16200
Andy 13600 + 8801 = 22401
George 14800 + 12401 = 27201
Excellent game all around for all 3 players (and no, not betting everything on that Daily Double didn’t end up costing Amanda the game, either!) George is the champion, though, and he’ll be back tomorrow to defend! We’ll have another post for you in 24 hours! See you then!
Congratulations, George!
