Happy Boxing Day!

Andy here with the recap of December 26th!

Today’s contestants:

Anthony is the latest in a line of Canadian champions!

J! round categories:
MARK TWAIN
“TOM” & “HUCK”
LIFE ON THE MISSISSIPPI
CELEBRATED JUMPING FROGS
THE PRINCE
THE PAUPER

Some confusion, there was applause for Jerry going 4/5 in “TOM” & “HUCK”; MARK TWAIN $600 had the Daily Double, and that was Jerry’s to play! Scores:

Jerry $3,000
Anthony $600
Genevieve $0

Jerry bet $3,000. His clue: Twain satirized the customs & institutions of the feudal world in this 1889 novel. A long title, but Jerry got it correct, and his score went to an early $6,000!

By the time the first break came around, Anthony and Genevieve were already trying to catch up, and not having much luck with it! Scores at the first break:

Jerry $7,000
Anthony $-200
Genevieve $-1,800

Genevieve’s cookbook collection numbers more than 500 books! She claims to use all of them!

Alex: Jerry Slowik is from Illinois, and he is obsessed with the films of Stanley Kubrick. What’s your favorite one of all of his?

Jerry: That’s right. I have to go with “2001: A Space Odyssey.” I saw a number of them
early in my life, and just from that point forward, I was quite impressed.

Alex: [ as HAL ] You have to stop, Dave. Dave, I’m getting sleepy.

Jerry: [ as HAL ] Why don’t you take a stress pill and think things over?

(What a great interview that was.)

Coming out of the break, it was mostly Jerry once again. I lost count of his correct responses! Scores after 29 clues:

Jerry $10,000
Anthony $400
Genevieve $-1,000

DJ! round categories:
THE BEATITUDES
WHERE ARE “-U”?
THE RUSSIAN REVOLUTION
OPERA MOMS
BOXING DAY
THE ANTONYM OF…

RUSSIAN REVOLUTION $1200 had the first Daily Double; Anthony found it on the 3rd clue of the round! Scores:
Jerry $10,400
Anthony $1,200
Genevieve $-1,000

Anthony bet $2,000. Clue: Leader of the Red Army during the Civil War, he met his demise in Mexico 2 decades later. His correct response put him at $3,200!

Anthony did pretty well in BOXING until $1,600 tripped up by the following: Insectoid name for the professional boxing weight class from 108 to 112 pounds. Anthony’s response wasn’t quite correct and Jerry picked up a key rebound!

OPERA MOMS $1600 had the final Daily Double, and Jerry had not relinquished control between Anthony’s last neg and finding it! Scores:

Jerry $13,600
Anthony $5,200
Genevieve $-1,000

Jerry bet $2,400. Hata & Ludmila are 2 moms who deal with the marriage broker Kecal in this Smetana opera. Jerry went for “The Matchmaker” and fell to $11,200.

Meanwhile, Jerry did his best to recover from the miss, and in spite of a few Triple Stumpers at $2,000, did keep his runaway!

Scores going into Final:
Jerry $20,400
Anthony $8,800
Genevieve $-200

FJ! category: TECH TERMS

FJ! clue: In a July 1990 post Yisrael Radai called this 7-letter term “a word I just coined for trojans, viruses, worms, etc.”

Anthony 8800 – 0 = 8800
Jerry 20400 + 2799 = 23199

Jerry looks like he’ll have a good run (like I thought with Larry earlier in the week!) I’ll have his title defense tomorrow. See you then!
