Andy here with a recap from January 8th!
Today’s players: John Schultz, Elizabeth Scott-Jones, and Elliot Yates!
Will Elliot win #5?
J! round categories:
WORLD OF WATER
SOLAR SYSTEM RHYME TIME
KIDDY LIT
“POP” STARS
THAT’S NO LADY
THAT’S MY WIFE
John did quite well over the first 15 clues, jumping out into a lead! I’d say Elizabeth looked slightly nervous as well, as she seemed hesitant in her responses and clue selection!
Scores at the first break:
John $4,400
Elliot $1,200
Elizabeth $1,000
John’s proposal story piqued Alex’s attention. I really need to start a counter.
Elliot says that “William Tell” was the toughest opera he’s ever produced. I’m sure he’s not the only person around here wishing that opera had stayed in Rossini’s head!
The Daily Double took a long while to come out! This round’s one was under WATER $600! Elliot played this one on the 24th clue of the round, with scores at:
John $4,400
Elliot $3,400
Elizabeth $1,200
Elliot bet $2,400. His clue: Arkansas’ Hot Springs average 143 degrees; presumably these Oklahoma springs are 69 degrees hotter. Elliot said “Tulsa Springs” and fell to $1,000 — but when Alex pointed out 143+69=212, Elliot smiled.
We got through 30 clues this round! Scores after the J! round:
John $6,000
Elliot $2,800
Elizabeth $1,200
DJ! round categories:
BODY CHECK
DISNEY SONGS
SOUTH AMERICAN CAPITALS
FASHION
COLORFUL ANAGRAMS
RESISTANCE IS UTILE
DISNEY SONGS $1600, the round’s fourth clue, had the first Daily Double. This was Elliot’s, and scores were:
John $6,000
Elliot $4,800
Elizabeth $1,600
John bet $4,000. His clue: Simba & Nala sing it on realizing they’ve found romance. His correct response put him at $8,800!
John and Elliot got into quite a back-and-forth, and John found the final Daily Double under BODY CHECK $1200! Scores:
John $13,600
Elliot $13,200
Elizabeth $4,000
John bet $5,000. His clue: These in women are also called oviducts. His correct response put him at $18,600!
Sadly, we did not get to all 60 clues — we missed the last two in Fashion! Scores going into Final:
John $20,600
Elliot $13,200
Elizabeth $4,000
FJ! category: ARTISTS
FJ! clue: He said a 2009 exhibit was the 1st time taxpayers’ money was used “to hang my pictures up rather than scrape them off”
Elizabeth 4000 – 3900 = 100
Elliot 13200 + 7401 = 20601
John 20600 + 7000 = 27600
So Elliot has been dethroned as champion! Will 4 wins and $65,000 be enough for the ToC? We shall see!
My Coryat: $31,600 (39 right, 3 wrong).
