Here’s tonight’s Final Jeopardy for Monday, October 17, 2016:
Final Jeopardy! category: HISTORIC RELATIVES
Final Jeopardy! clue: In the same year as Waterloo, the Duke of Wellington’s brother-in-law General Edward Pakenham died in this battle in North America
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s contestants:
Shannon Dillmore, a genomics research manager from Raleigh, North Carolina
Marianne Novak, an orthodox rabbinical student from Skokie, Illinois
Susan Cole, a legislative librarian from Bowie, Maryland (3-day total: $67,800)
What is the Battle of New Orleans?
Sir Edward Pakenham was the commander of the British forces as the Battle of New Orleans. When he arrived to lead the British Army, Pakenham was enraged by Andrew Jackson’s overnight raid of the British camp. The next morning, Pakenham attacked. The siege lasted 30 minutes before the British were soundly routed. Pakenham himself died on the battlefield.
Moreover, this entire battle was in vain as news of the Treaty of Ghent, which had ended the War of 1812, had yet to reach New Orleans.
Here’s a Sir Edward Pakenham bio at the National Park Service website.
