Here’s tonight’s Final Jeopardy answer and question for Friday, March 31, 2017:
Final Jeopardy! category: FAMOUS BRITISH NAMES
Final Jeopardy! clue/answer: He used the coat of arms granted to his father in 1596; it depicts a long-shafted weapon, a visual pun on the family name
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s contestants:
Aaron Benor, an online sales director from Rutherford, New Jersey![]() |
Andrea Palmiter, a strategic data analyst from Woodinville, Washington![]() |
Eric Vernon, a retired government relations specialist from Ottawa, Ontario (1-day total: $26,800)![]() |
Congratulations to Jeopardy! on reaching Episode #7500! Fun fact, though: While today’s episode is actually labeled 7500, it is only the 7435th episode produced. All the way back in the spring and summer of 1985, during the show’s first season, a 13-week block of 65 episodes were given duplicate episode numbers, as many affiliates took a few weeks to actually start broadcasting the new Jeopardy! when it returned to the air in 1984.
Still, 7,500 episodes is no mean feat. Congratulations to Jeopardy! on its massive longevity (And yes, I’d love to see 7,500 more!)
Who is William Shakespeare?
As you can see here, William Shakespeare’s coat of arms, which per some big news last summer was granted to his father in 1596, contains a spear. Visual puns are often used in heraldry, like the Bloemfontein coat of arms referred to recently in another Final Jeopardy.

Let’s give it up for 7,500 Jeopardy! episodes. I’m sure the 10,000th will be a big one.
I don’t think we’ll make it to the 8,000th episode before Alex Trebek retires, but who knows? Anything can still happen.
He could renew his contract, which ends after next season.
He should retire after the next two seasons.

With a projected 75 regular-play games to go prior to the Tournament of Champions cutoff, after 250,000 simulations, our model shows:
An average of 2.7723 5+-time champions (standard deviation 1.287).
An average of 4.3181 4+-time champions (standard deviation 1.5667).
An early cutoff took place 8.963% of the time (or a 5-game winner will be left out).
Eric Vernon qualified 11.198% of the time.
Tim Kutz qualified 70.518% of the time.
Todd Giese qualified 26.804% of the time.
Rob Liguori qualified 5.946% of the time.
Fred Vaughn qualified 0.916% of the time.
Miscellany:
Eric Vernon needs to use some of his winnings for new glasses! Watching him squint was painful!
I’m sure Eric is acutely aware of the issues he had with vision on set.
A lot of contestants are unaware of how far the screens are away (and how small they are.)
Unfortunately for him, with my belief as to the taping schedule (and this being an odd numbered week), I don’t even think he’d have time to get an updated prescription before next week’s shows.
Eric should’ve been in the lead, not Andrea.
