What is Belize?

[collapse]

Did you know that you can now find game-by-game stats of everyone, including Austin Rogers, who has won 10 or more games on Jeopardy!, here on the site?

The name of the capital city of Belize, Belmopan, is a union of the words “Belize” and “Mopan”; the Mopan river flows near the planned capital city. It was founded because Belize City was nearly 75% destroyed in 1961 due to Hurricane Hattie, and Belize officials wanted a better location for a capital city. Even though Belize has been independent since 1981 and Belmopan the official capital since 1970, embassies have been slow to move; The US embassy in Belmopan only opened in 2006, and four embassies and 29 consulates (including Canada’s) are still in Belize City.

The Mopan begins in neighboring Guatemala before reaching the Belize River at its confluence with the Macal River..

knew that only because I lived in the Caribbean for 3 years….

  2. Unexpected Triple Stumper here.

    • If the last 5 letters of Belize’s capital don’t jump out at you, it’s very easy to think that the Panama Canal might have possibly bypassed a river.

      • I’d hesitate to characterize any FJ clue as “easy”, wouldn’t (haven’t) you?! 🙂

        • I didn’t say the clue was easy; I said it was very easy to go down the Panama path (as two of our contestants did). I personally did not struggle with this, but world capitals are a strong suit for me.

          • You’re right, you didn’t. Didn’t notice the two incorrect Panama responses. That’ll teach me to try to be humorous before watching the actual show! Mea culpa. 🤐

I went down the same path. I normally don’t feel like an idiot when I miss a Final, but today was an exception.

I would have gotten this FJ a year ago, back when I crammed on world capitals for my one appearance, but today it stumped me. Sometimes, timing’s everything.

  4. I enjoyed figuring out the Red Stick Festival clue (Baton Rouge), but I think that clue would have been better suited as a Final Jeopardy question.

  5. Not to boast, but I nailed every answer in the Botany category. Not sure that I’ve ever done that before. But my graduate degree is in plant biology.

  6. What was the name of the category in the first round that listed 3 movies in each clue? I didn’t catch that.

  7. What was the name of the category in the first round that listed 3 movies in each clue? I didn’t catch the name of that.

  8. I saw a clue that read: “The Fly”, “Kung Fu Panda”, “Snakes on a Plane”..what was that category? Those three movies have absolutely nothing in common!

  9. So the streak for leaders getting Final right, on Fridays, is over…

  10. freddie leonard | October 28, 2017 at 5:14 pm |

Anand would be the last champion that could qualify for this ToC if he wins 5 games, loses next Friday and wins more money than Jon Eisenmann.

  11. How will austin do in the toc? I can see him not making it to the final round.
