What is “American Gothic”?
The house in Grant Wood’s famous painting “American Gothic” is known as “Dibble House” and is also on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.
From a 2012 article in the Los Angeles Times:
It was the big gothic window on the second story that struck Wood in 1930, when he was driving through Eldon with a friend. The intricate window, ordered from a Sears catalog, looked out of place in the modest house on the prairie. Wood immediately wanted to paint the plain house and its fancy frill.
“He saw it as humorous,” said R. Tripp Evans, author of “Grant Wood: A Life.” “It embodied everything that was both comical and endearing about Midwestern culture.”
Delivery before December 25 is very unlikely on any orders at this point. However, you can still get all of the items from The Jeopardy! Fan Online Store. Here are our top sellers; all prices are in US dollars!

The Jeopardy! writers must like “American Gothic” a lot. It’s my impression it’s been the correct FJ! response more than a couple of times.
yeah, first I had no idea but when I googled the painting it looked really familiar. I think it was even not to long ago that they had it as a clue.
The only result returned for Final Jeopardy! is the one that I remembered when the clue was revealed – the second semifinal of the 2016 Teachers Tournament.
Grant Wood was a Final response earlier this season, during Austin Rogers’s run.
Here’s a bit of trivia: American Gothic by Wood and Nighthawks by Edward Hopper were both shown at the 1938 American Exposition at the Art Institute of Chicago.
Strange bet by Kate. Why not bet $10,001 to assure a win over Denise if she bets it all. The $9800 bet was not risky enough to cover Denise. I understand the contestants take as much time as needed to do the math, right?
You call out a contestant for betting short here from 2nd, yet you suggested last month that Austin do the same thing in the ToC final.
Yes, 3 different stakes in TOC.
Only W/L here.
Three different stakes in this game as well. Second and third have cash prizes.
The difference in amounts is significant in TOC, not in a regular game.
Question. I had 4 years of German in school and that never did me a bit of good in life and it never helped on jeopardy because jeopardy is always asking about french and latin words and phrases. What is the best way to study french and latin phrases? Should I sign up for a class or is there an easier way?
