More information about Final Jeopardy:

“The English have no respect for their language, and will not teach their children to speak it. They spell it so abominably that no man can teach himself what it sounds like.”

Basically, the plot of George Bernard Shaw’s “Pygmalion” revolves around a bet between two linguists, Henry Higgins and Colonel Pickering, as to whether Higgins can teach proper English to Eliza Dolittle (instead of Cockney slang) within six months.

The play was famously adapted into the Lerner & Loewe Broadway musical “My Fair Lady”.

I don’t make it a habit to precall FJ answers, but today I did. It seems to me that Pygmalion is one of the writers’ favorites.

I should really try and read some GBS before I die…
