Today’s Final Jeopardy – April 2, 2019

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Music Legends) for Tuesday, April 2, 2019 (Season 35, Episode 147):

These 2 “monarchs” of popular culture both passed away on August 16, one in 2018, the other 41 years earlier

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s contestants:

Anika Gregg, an operations manager from Belmont, Massachusetts
Anika Gregg on Jeopardy!
Erich Johnson, a musician & grad student from Brooklyn, New York
Erich Johnson on Jeopardy!
Steven Grade, a sports industry consultant from Atlanta, Georgia (4-day total: $88,300)
Steven Grade on Jeopardy!

Will Steven break the curse of 4-time champions? The current drought between 5-time champions (96 games) is the fourth-longest in the history of the show (the longest is 115). Moreover, there have been 8 4-time champions who have lost in their 5th game. He’ll need a win to get onto Page 1 of the ToC Tracker.

Online testing is coming up April 9, 10, and 11! Looking to practice? Video of the recent South Florida test is available!

An average of 6.087 4+-time champions (standard deviation 1.7419).

An early cutoff took place 3.374% of the time (or a 5-game winner will be left out).

Steven Grade qualified 100.000% of the time.
Eric R. Backes qualified 86.466% of the time.
Anneke Garcia qualified 67.305% of the time.
Lindsey Shultz qualified 40.088% of the time.
Dave Leffler qualified 14.767% of the time.
Jonathan Dinerstein qualified 2.644% of the time.
Alex Schmidt qualified 0.000% of the time.

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • Something I’d like to point out, because the show does receive criticism when they only feature white men in categories: Four of the five works in the BESTSELLERS category were written by women, the fifth by an Asian-American.
  • Effective in first on buzzer stats: Steven 46.15% (24/52), Anika 31.58% (18/52), Erich 17.54% (10/52)

  1. You have “Frankin” in Steven’s FJ! response. I assume it’s a typo on this end, because Jeopardy! would have never accepted that. 🙂

  2. You gotta be kidding me! This must have been one of the easiest FJ in a long time! But 5x congratulations to Steven, finally!

    • It’s only easy if you know the answer. 😉

Right, I think I’m guilty of not including women. I got Elvis immediately, but all I could think of was Prince, even though that was a couple of years earlier. Dumb me, since I’m pretty sure Aretha’s funeral is still going on. 😉

      • At least Elvis should have been gotten by everybody, most recorded and highest selling artist EVER worldwide. King was a reasonable guess since the clue said “monarch”.And I’m not even such an Elvis fan. But you just know. Like you know JFK, Stalin or Lennon,Eisenhower or Hitler (good or bad) or that Paris is the French capital. Some things or people are -or at least should be- common knowledge. You don’t need to be on J! for that. Just my opinion.

    • There are a number of other plausible answers, especially if you’re not sure about dates. Michael Jackson, B.B. King, and Prince are all within the realm of consideration.

  3. This is one of my favorite FJ questions in a while. I got Elvis right away, but despite remembering her songs and being able to picture her face, it took me a couple minutes to remember Aretha’s name. Anyway Congrats to Steven on breaking the curse. Now I’m just hoping that Lindsey can stay in contention for the TOC.

    • She is #13 overall right now, taking Dhruv, Steven and the TT winner (whoever that will be shortly, just replacing Larry who sadly passed away))into account. Maybe after the “drought” we’ll get a row of 5 or 5+ game winners, you never know….
