Jeopardy! Announces 2019 Tournament Of Champions Field

In a surprising move, Jeopardy!’s producers announced its 2019 Tournament of Champions field in a YouTube video this morning.

You can view the video here:

The 15 players are:
James Holzhauer
Josh Hill
Ryan Fenster
Kyle Jones
Rob Worman
Alan Dunn
Steven Grade
Gilbert Collins
Rachel Lindgren
Eric R. Backes
Anneke Garcia
Lindsey Shultz
Francois Barcomb
Dhruv Gaur
Emma Boettcher

14 of the 15 spots come as no surprise. However, this appears that the producers have used their discretion to give the spot for the deceased Larry Martin to Emma Boettcher, meaning that a James Holzhauer-Emma Boettcher rematch could very well happen.

Jimmy did say in the video that other players who might have otherwise qualified would be held over for a future tournament; however, what this means for the following Tournament of Champions is currently unknown. I anticipate more will be known in the coming weeks and months on that front.

However, the early release of this information does give me here at The Jeopardy! Fan plenty of time to produce statistical analyses and predictions for this tournament. Look for that over the coming weeks and months!

Since Alex Trebek’s diagnosis of stage 4 pancreatic cancer, many community members have been raising money. The Jeopardy! Fan Online Store is as well! All proceeds from any “Keep The Faith And We’ll Win” shirt sold will be donated to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. To date, over $370 has been raised.)

As long as the seven 4-time winners who got passed up in favor of Emma’s inclusion will get to play in the next TOC, I guess I’m OK with this marketing gimmick. But if those seven don’t get into the next TOC (and especially true for Dave Leffler), there’ll be many unhappy J! fans (including me) who’ll consider this rules change as counter to the show’s traditional excellence with its TOC format.

Maybe they could do two ToCs in one season? Fitting room of 4-time champions from Ryan Bilger and Dave Leffler to Kyle Becker. That’s 8 spots already, and if Sam Kavanaugh wins more games, that’ll be 9 spots. I’m guessing there will also be another college student and teacher in the field, so there’s 11. It could be the last season before Alex retires, so maybe after doing both of them, they’ll have another ultimate tournament including Brad, Ken, James, and all the other all time greats.
