Derived from the character Pooh-Bah in The Mikado—the character in that work holds numerous high offices, including “Lord High Everything Else”—the term “Grand Poobah” is probably best known today from its recurring use on The Flintstones, as the head of the Loyal Order of Water Buffaloes. It’s also generally used today in a mocking fashion of someone who has an inflated sense of self-regard and takes impressive titles for themself.
