I’m pleased to see that Alex’s final Final Jeopardy! clue was to do with a contribution by women to science.
Isotopes are two or more forms of a single chemical element with identical atomic numbers (and therefore position on the periodic table) but with different atomic masses and physical properties. For example, carbon has carbon-12 (the most common), carbon-13 (also stable), and carbon-14 (famously radioactive) isotopes; the decay of carbon-14 is famously used in order to accurately date carbon-based materials up to 60,000 years.
Dr. Todd’s coining of the term isotope came from a conversation she was having with family friend Frederick Soddy, who was doing research on radioactive elements that can have multiple atomic masses, stuck trying to figure out what name to give the new discovery. “Isotope” from “isos topos”, or “equal place”, was coined by Dr. Todd.

Andy’s Thoughts:
- Yoshie’s contestant interview talked about crossword puzzles on Wednesday. Knowing this, the situation called for a much larger bet than $3,000 on her Daily Double. The lack of aggression there let Jim back into the game, and he took full advantage to take the lead going into Final Jeopardy.
- I know this is a very difficult task, but keeping tabs on the score would keep players from making crucial strategic errors. When holding a slim lead, you should select low-valued clues; when behind, select high-valued ones.
- It seems to me from watching that the DOG IS MY CO-PILOT $1600 had a tape stoppage so that Alex could officially rule against Yoshie before Final Jeopardy. Because tape stopped, rebounds are not allowed.

Watching The Chase the other night made me appreciate Jeopardy all the more.
As this was the Christmas edition and considering my Dad passed on Christmas Eve 2000, I thought I would be a lot more emotional than I was. Still, I did stand up and send Mr. Trebek off with a solid Cub Scout CubMaster salute during the entire farewell segment. Thank you Sir…God Speed…rest well!!! I’d like to see Brad Rutter guest host think his personality fits better than Ken but think Ken will do a good job. The key is for the host not to make it about them.
Buzzy Cohen could be good as well.
Watched The Chase and in an hour only had about a half of the questions Jeopardy has in 30 min. Too much glitz and noise.
Going to miss Alex, though in my market (Oregon) rerun episodes are shown on Saturdays and Sundays so he will still be getting aired, at least for a while.
I too was disappointed with The Chase. Pretty disjointed show. I am looking forward to see if Ken can humbly host on Monday.
The Chase on cable wasn’t great, but it was far better than this network version. It was better produced and had a much better host in Brooke Burns. I agree with everybody about it though, much too gimmicky for its own good.
In fact I think Brooke Burns would be a good choice to give a tryout for Jeopardy!. She’s very good.
I lasted 15 minutes watching the first new Chase. I was put off by the snarky condescension of the stars against the contestants. It’s probably all scripted by those behind the scenes but I won’t waste any more of my time watching it. I have to alphabetize the spices on my spice rack.
