Today’s Final Jeopardy – Friday, March 12, 2021

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Historic Places) for Friday, March 12, 2021 (Season 37, Game 120):

8 Pres. have visited this battle site with an Algonquian name about 50 miles from Washington; for McKinley, it was a return visit

(correct response beneath the contestants)

The Jeopardy! community is mourning the loss of Brayden Smith, who passed away on February 5. The Brayden Smith Memorial Fund has been established, dedicated to furthering the educational aspirations of Southern Nevada students.

Today’s contestants:

Keith Bednarczuk, a letter carrier from Columbus, Ohio
Keith Bednarczuk on Jeopardy!
Michalle Gould, a librarian originally from Austin, Texas
Michalle Gould on Jeopardy!
Dave Pai, a field application scientist originally from Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania (1-day total: $28,300)
Dave Pai on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts: Dave dominated Double Jeopardy! yesterday and rode them to a runaway victory in yesterday’s match. If he can keep that mojo going, Win #2 should not be difficult for him. But the signalling device is fickle and a lot can happen!

PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to abide by physical distancing guidelines and when you are not able to do so, properly wear a mask. Ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

More information about Final Jeopardy: (The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2021 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)

The first of the 8 sitting Presidents to visit Antietam was the very famous visit by Abraham Lincoln to try to prod George McClellan into action; William McKinley served as a sergeant in Company E, 23rd Ohio Infantry, and returned to visit the battlefield as President. The most recent sitting President to visit Antietam in Maryland (50 miles as the crow flies from DC) was Jimmy Carter in 1978. The National Park Service has a page detailing the Presidential visits.

I’d also like to commend the writers for putting “with an Algonquin name” into the clue here in order to pin this correct response; only Antietam fits the entire clue as worded; Antietam is believed to derive from an Algonquin phrase meaning “swift-flowing stream”; the battlefield is named after Antietam Creek.

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • The show’s writers keep wanting to shoehorn Parson Weems into the game, like GRANT WOOD’S AMERICANA $2000 today. Of course, it fell for a Triple Stumper. Nobody cares about Parson Weems.
  • This week’s games raised a total of $112,503 for Stand Up to Cancer.
  • I can understand Keith’s Final Jeopardy! wager, as there’s a higher likelihood of a math error from Michalle due to his unusual score.

How will the final new host of jeopardy be chosen? I’m a new person here so my apologies if this was answered before.
