Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Triple-“A” Geography) for Tuesday, March 16, 2021 (Season 37, Game 122):
Home to the Piazza Alberica, this Italian city is better known for what it supplied to works by Henry Moore & Michelangelo
(correct response beneath the contestants)
The Jeopardy! community is mourning the loss of Brayden Smith, who passed away on February 5. The Brayden Smith Memorial Fund has been established, dedicated to furthering the educational aspirations of Southern Nevada students.
Today’s contestants:
Wendy Voelker, a nonprofit fundraising professional from Twinsburg, Ohio![]() |
Brendan Sargent, a community organizer originally from Worcester, Massachusetts![]() |
Tom Duffey, an engineering manager originally from Chicago, Illinois (1-day total: $31,400)![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts: Tom put up a very strong overall performance yesterday in claiming victory #1. It’s been awhile since we’ve seen a player get to 3 wins, though, and the prediction model only gives Tom a 38.6% chance to do so.

Correct response: What is Carrara?
More information about Final Jeopardy: (The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2021 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)
Carrara is a city of about 60,000 people in north-central Italy (in the Tuscany region) very famous for its marble quarries; its marble has been famously used as building material for centuries, from the Pantheon and Trajan’s Column in Rome to many marble sculptures by the aforementioned Michaelangelo and Henry Moore.
Personally, I think that this is going to play as a difficult Final – I like the categorization of it, making it clear that the answer has 3 As. If you haven’t heard of Carrara, though, this is going to be a very long 30 seconds.

Never mind. Fixed! Thanks.
I knew this would be a difficult FJ. I didn’t have a clue.
Saw the answer here, but agree that this was a difficult Final. Have not seen the show yet to see if they give any help to the contestants like they do any time there is a “quote” involved in the category title, like “Each response will start with P,or G” or “Each response will contain those letters, in that order”. I started thinking with cities that start with “A” but maybe they quantified the obvious “Your response will contain three A’s”. Without that, i would be surprised if anyone could get it. When i saw the answer, i immediately thought of the marble from that area, which led to Michelangelo.
Just 42 right answers today. Haven’t looked at historical stats, but feels like a rough game (the missed Daily Doubles suppressed the scores as well, of course).
I had nothing for Final, but I want to echo what Andy said about it being a great FJ category. In my opinion, a good FJ category should feel like something that you could come up with five clues for–i.e. something that could realistically be a category in the Jeopardy or Double Jeopardy rounds. Sometimes FJ categories feel more like hints than categories–which is fine in a vacuum and part of what makes a good FJ feel like a puzzle to solve, but which doesn’t have the same aesthetic appeal for me. Maybe I’m just super-picky, but Jeopardy writer seems like a dream job for me, so I have extremely high expectations. 😉
“State Capitals East of the Mississippi” is an example of an FJ clue I saw a little while ago that felt more like a hint than a real category.
Thought at least one would get it right. Carrara marble has been used for centuries for both building and sculpting so figured it must be the name of the area or city near where it is quarried. Pretty high percentage of incorrect answers by all three.
Not able to think of any cities in Italy with three A’s, I guessed Mariana thinking possibly there was a city in Italy named that known for marble. I like Brendan’s answer better than mine.
My first thought was Catania, but as that’s in Sicily. Is mostly known for its Volcano. I then thought of the Marble and figured that there must a be a city with that name. I think that there is also a town near Naples named Afragola, but I can’t think of anything memorable that comes from there.
So, with the final scores here, I’m curious – what is the lowest score someone has had, going into a three-person final jeopardy, that is still a runaway? 8,400 feels like it’s probably one of the lowest runaways we’ve seen, but I’m wondering if there are any others. Seems like an interesting metric to look at.
Love the new champ, 1st his Taylor Swift story then his FJ response! 😄
For some reason, I thought the FJ answer was “Galatea”, but I don’t think that’s an Italian city.
What was the answer to the question in the dive category… something about “one who takes a profit or…” and it’s supposed to be the name of a dive. I missed it!
“Gainer”.
