Today’s Final Jeopardy – Wednesday, March 17, 2021

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Presidential Elections) for Wednesday, March 17, 2021 (Season 37, Game 123):

In the 1912 election these 2 parties on the left of the political spectrum finished 2nd & 4th, totaling 1/3 of the votes

(correct response beneath the contestants)

The Jeopardy! community is mourning the loss of Brayden Smith, who passed away on February 5. The Brayden Smith Memorial Fund has been established, dedicated to furthering the educational aspirations of Southern Nevada students.

Today’s contestants:

Anthony Jones, a Certified Financial Planner from Falls Church, Virginia
Anthony Jones on Jeopardy!
Morgan Briles, a librarian from Nacogdoches, Texas
Morgan Briles on Jeopardy!
Brendan Sargent, a community organizer originally from Worcester, Massachusetts (1-day total: $7,600)
Brendan Sargent on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts: Brendan survived a very difficult game yesterday, picking up a runaway in his opening game. If he can keep things together today, he’ll be able to pick up a 2nd win today. Champs have seemingly found it more difficult to defend as of late; reports are starting to surface that COVID protocols have extended the taping day slightly and that might make it more difficult to put together a longer streak.

One thing that I would also like to address: There are some viewers who believe that the show is not serious enough in its fundraising efforts (as the show is matching winnings to donate to its guest hosts’ preferred charity) because the clues (giving yesterday’s game as an example) were more difficult in a specific game. I would just like to say that the show, for the sake of fairness, needs to operate a normal competition for the sake of the contestants involved, who are still competing for actual prize money. Making the game easier specifically because money is being matched for charity would also be problematic here.

PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to abide by physical distancing guidelines and when you are not able to do so, properly wear a mask. Ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

Due to a rift in the Republican Party between 1908 and 1912, both Teddy Roosevelt (representing progressives) and incumbent President William Howard Taft (representing conservatives and running under the Republican ticket) both ran for President in 1912; The Progressives ended up second (Woodrow Wilson and the Democrats won the election due to the Republican split; Taft finished 3rd); Eugene Debs and the Socialist Party picked up 6% of the national popular vote, finishing 4th. The Progressives’ 2nd-place finish is the best modern finish of any third party.

I think it’s more likely that contestants will think “Bull Moose” as opposed to “Progressive”, so I’m wondering what would be acceptable. Either/or?

    • In the Harry Friedman Era, I’d say “yes”. Under Mike Richards, the judging has proven to be such a head-scratcher that I don’t know.

    • I was thinking the same thing Alan. I said Bull Moose Party as one of them. That’s just so heavily associated with Teddy Roosevelt.

  2. James M. Bailey | March 17, 2021 at 5:23 pm |

Female reference librarians are the stone cold killers of Jeopardy! Just ask James.

  3. Thought it was funny when Brendan said, “what is Schitt’s Creek” that they captioned it so the uninformed viewer would know he wasn’t using an obscenity.

  4. Zach Hicks | March 17, 2021 at 6:25 pm |

Dadgummit, Teddy. Your time was done.

  5. And for the record: those top four candidates finished in the same order in terms of electoral votes, so there’s no fault in the clue on that ground.

  6. Brad (not Rutter) | March 17, 2021 at 9:35 pm |

I became a Morgan fan today. Like her perky personality. And Mark, I also thought the caption was hilarious.

  7. Steven Plunkett | March 18, 2021 at 12:57 am |

Was this the first time where text was imposed on the screen to explain to fans that a contestant was in fact not swearing? (Brendan’s answer of “What is Schitt’s Creek?”)
