Today’s Final Jeopardy – Thursday, July 29, 2021

Happy Thursday! Today is Day 4 of LeVar Burton’s hosting stint; $102,400 has been donated thus far to Reading is Fundamental. Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category World Cities) for Thursday, July 29, 2021 (Season 37, Game 219):

This Colombian port of 1 million people gets its name from Phoenician for “New Town”

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s contestants:

Bryan Cracchiolo, an assistant registrar from White Plains, New York
Bryan Cracchiolo on Jeopardy!
Dana Rosner, a sales manager from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Dana Rosner on Jeopardy!
Matt Amodio, a Ph.D student from New Haven, Connecticut (6-day total: $194,800)
Matt Amodio on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts: Matt has found and hit his stride, for sure. Yesterday was a very dominant performance, and if not for the six incorrect responses it would have been even more dominant. Averaging 4.5 incorrect responses per game, though, leaves him at least partly vulnerable to one of those incorrect responses coming at an unlucky time for him.

PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they are able to. When wearing a mask, ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

Cartagena, Colombia gets its name from the Spanish city of the same name, which was founded by the Phoenicians as “Qart Hadasht”, or “New Town”; the more famous Phoenician city of Carthage has the same general etymology. The Colombian Cartagena is a major Caribbean port of the country and has existed since the 1500s.

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • $179,400 has been donated thus far to Reading is Fundamental; $2,635,226 has been donated on behalf of all hosts.
  • $74,000 is the 21st-highest one-day total of all time on Jeopardy! and the 3rd-highest of anyone not named James Holzhauer.
  • $39,000 is the second-best Coryat Score of all time. It’s $200 short of Ken Jennings’ record of $39,200, set in Ken’s 7th game on June 10, 2004.
  • Including Final Jeopardy!, Matt’s performance of 44 correct is 1 short of the known record for correct responses in a single game (Ken Jennings had 45 correct in a game on multiple occasions.)
  • Ken Jennings’ best “in first on buzzer” performance was 46/56, in his 35th game on July 20, 2004

  1. Supposedly correct spelling is not required in Final Jeopardy but with the Barry Berry Gordy controversy would my guess of Cartahayna be accepted?

  2. Love how after you added the placement of today’s score compared to the top scores, you wrote the position of people that are not James Holzhauer. That cracked me up for some reason.

  3. Holy crap. So glad Josh Saak bungled that $400 question last week.

    • Who knows how many Super Champions we never got to see because some little thing didn’t go their way in their first game.

    • And Josh has to really be kicking himself at this point. His flub sunk his own ToC chances as well as ending his time on the show.

  4. Looks like Reading is Fundamental is getting a hefty check this week thanks to Matt.

  5. Oh my! Reading is fundamental is getting a big lump sum thanks to Matt and the other players. 268000 dollars is big. Matt should be season 37’s biggest winner so far. If this keeps up, Matt could very well get 300K or somewhere closer to that.

  6. Huge congratulations to Matt!!
I am most impressed by his 73% 1st on the buzzer and his 85% chance to win an 8th game. Best of luck tomorrow Matt!
I do really need for this week to end, though. Some moments these past few days, I felt like I was watching Saturday Night Live.

  7. Courtney Shah was an impressive champion because she was able to win from third place on multiple occasions.

Matt is the closest thing to the second coming of James Holzhauer. LeVar Burton can be honored to be part of his reign as champion.

    • I completely agree that he is the best player since James. He also utilizes a lot of James’ strategies, such as going for the higher dollar clues first and betting big on most of the daily doubles and final jeopardies. As with Ken and James, Matt has an impressive depth and breadth of knowledge.

  8. Go Matt!

  9. Unfortunately have missed all of Matt’s run due to Olympics preempting Jeopardy! in my area! Besides James Holzhauer, Matt’s last two days totals is second best two days total ever!

  10. I actually went “wow” out loud when he got that FJ correct. This has been must see television. I am impressed by how much Matt seems to be enjoying himself during game play. He’s a more animated Holzhauer!

  11. Is $268,800 the 3rd highest 7-Day Total in “Jeopardy!” history? I know that Austin Rogers with $278,300 & James Holzhauer with $415,035 are ahead of him.

Ok, getting some serious James vibes here. That was the most dominant single game I have witnessed. I think Josh Saak should get an invitation to the ToC based on being tied with this guy with two clues left.

    • Probably won’t happen, but I wouldn’t mind seeing Josh get an invite. A Matt vs. Josh rematch could be interesting. I can’t help but think his own run would have gone a while longer.

      • I can’t help but wonder how many would-be ToC contenders we never saw due to luck of the draw. Though we don’t know what would have happened in the hypothetical match, I suspect our most recent ToC winner, Sam Kavanaugh, is grateful that Jason Zuffranieri did not play until the Friday game that week.
