Today’s Final Jeopardy – Friday, July 9, 2021

Today is the final day of Dr. Sanjay Gupta’s hosting stint. George Stephanopoulos hosts next week’s games. Through 9 days, $210,859 has been donated to Odyssey Atlanta. Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category 1980s Bestsellers) for Friday, July 9, 2021 (Season 37, Game 205):

The title of this 1985 novel by a Canadian author partly alludes to the similarly named stories in a 14th century work

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s contestants:

Kathryn Derfler, an executive assistant & office manager from Brooklyn, New York
Kathryn Derfler on Jeopardy!
Tom Tipps, a software project manager from San Diego, California
Tom Tipps on Jeopardy!
Jen Jazwinski, an early literacy librarian from Algonquin, Illinois (1-day total: $42,001)
Jen Jazwinski on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts: Jen played a very strong game yesterday, but dodged a bullet when her Final Jeopardy! math error ended up not costing her. If she plays as well today as she did yesterday, she should have no problems taking win #2. I hope that she checks her math better, though!

PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they are able to. When wearing a mask, ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

The title of Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale is inspired by Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales of the 14th century; most of the chapters of that work are in the form of “The ____’s Tale”. Set in Gilead, a fundamentalist dystopian future in what is currently the United States, women are considered to be property of the state. It also inspired a TV series on the streaming service Hulu. What’s more chilling: Atwood said during promotional work for the TV series that there’s “nothing in the book that didn’t happen, somewhere.” More advice from Atwood when it comes to standing up against fascism: “Support your leaders who are standing against unconstitutional laws; keep informed, as best as possible. Everything is ‘as best as possible’ right now.”

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • Through Dr. Sanjay Gupta’s hosting stint, $231,059 has been donated to Odyssey Atlanta. $2,144,020 has been donated in total through all hosts.
  • I really appreciated how the judge’s rulings were very clearly explained by Sanjay today.

  1. I was impressed with Dr. Gupta’s performance.

  2. I am very impressed by Dr. Gupta’s hosting performnace over these two weeks. He has done a great job. And very impressed with Jen’s win. I would definitely recommend reading the handmaid’s tale for anyone who is a fan of that book. Jen made a good comeback today.

  3. Jen was lucky becsuse she got the FJ client that the others missed. She should’ve bet $0 but she didnt read about how to bet.

Like Courtney, Jen has won fr iron a 3rd place FJ.

  4. Dr. Gupta has been very good!

You have mentioned that there are 20 players who have won at least eight games on Jeopardy! The website for the show lists only winners of nine games and up. The only eight-game winners I can think of are Jennifer, Mackenzie and Karen from the last T of C. Is there a list (or do you know) who the other eight-game winners are?

    Thank you

  6. Are participants allowed to use a calculator when figuring out their wagers?

  7. Now that the game is airing/has aired in the main Eastern slots:

The ruling in favor of Jen’s Final Jeopardy! response is entirely consistent with past practice regarding articles, and is a rule upon which contestants are specifically briefed before play begins. In particular, they are given the example of “The Invisible Man” by H.G. Wells vice “Invisible Man” by Ralph Ellison as responses that cannot be substituted for each other. Neither challenger has grounds to sustain an appeal to be permitted to compete again.

I strongly suspect that any comment claiming the judges mis-ruled on Final Jeopardy! will not be allowed here.

In my opinion, Gupta was as good as anyone. I suspect Stephanopoulos will be similar.
