Happy Tuesday! It’s Day 2 of Season 38! Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Scientific Etymology) for Tuesday, September 14, 2021 (Season 38, Game 2):
2 of the 3 men for whom armalcolite, a dark gray mineral discovered in 1969, is named
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s contestants:
Elizabeth Hunter, a community theatre artistic director from Somerville, Massachusetts![]() |
Daniel Lee, a tutor from Ridgewood, New York![]() |
Matt Amodio, a Ph.D student from New Haven, Connecticut (19-day total: $642,601)![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts: No, Daniel Lee is not the same Daniel Lee that played last season. There was a pretty bad mistake made yesterday by the web team. Considering that this sort of action perpetuates negative stereotypes against Asian-Americans, this was not a mistake that the show needed to be making these days. On to Matt Amodio, he put up a very dominant performance yesterday, but only at times. His “in first on buzzer” percentage was well below his average from last season, so he might be vulnerable here, especially if the Daily Doubles don’t fall entirely his way.
Also, I might be in the minority here, but I don’t hate the new set. The blue-and-black background actually gives me the same curtain vibes that I get when I see clips of the Art Fleming version that resurface from time to time; that version made use of curtains on-set. It almost seems as though they went for the “throwback to Fleming a tiny bit” look. I think it works well.
PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they are able to. When wearing a mask, ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

While it was later found in locations on Earth, Armalcolite was first discovered in the Sea of Tranquility in July 1969 on the Apollo 11 mission, manned by Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins. Armalcolite was later named after the three of them.
Speaking from a writing perspective, this is the sort of clue that generated a forehead slap when I realized what the correct answer was. This is the sort of clue that I really liked and I hope that we see more of these in the post-Mike Richards Jeopardy! world.

Andy’s Thoughts:
- I wonder how many sports fans will be caught out by the fact that the NFL moved to 10 minutes for its regular season overtime periods in 2017.
- Today’s is the 7th regular-play game since 2004 with a Daily Double efficiency of 300.

It’s not just the blue curtain look–I’m sure everybody caught the black-and-white clip of the NBC “Jeopardy!” in the opening montage. Very classy!
And Johnny adding “From the Alex Trebek Stage at Sony Pictures Studios…” before his usual opening line is a nice touch.
In San Diego, Jeopardy! is still aired on NBC.
Ima – it’s not NBC airing it in San Diego. It’s being aired by the local affiliate.
Good catch. I finally noticed when I replayed the opening of the episode. But what I had noticed at the time was a FJ reveal of “Wellington” from a woman who sure looked liked Julia Collins. I saw an ad touting Matt and featuring Julia Collins who seemed to have filmed her appearance for this ad. I wonder if they will be customizing the video clip montage each week or each episode going forward.
I got the correct 10 minutes on the NFL question. If I had my way it would be zero, but that’s another matter.
At the end, when they include the FJ clue on the screen, now I noticed that they include the category on the screen as well. Finally for all of us who just could not remember the category, they now include it on the screen. Good goin’.
As for Matt, if he keeps winning, all he needs is to win $95,000+ to overtake Dave Madden for 4th place overall. So by the end of this week perhaps (if he keeps winning).
Oh yes, a few more items; the backdrop of the curtain; it appears like many stars on a black background. I love it. Plus, the updated music, bring last seasons’ music back. I love that more.
It had been in use since 2008. But I agree that they should’ve done better. Too synthesized.
I did know that the NFL went to 10-minute OT prior to today’s game, however, not before I noticed there seemed to be more tie games than there had been previously.
