Today’s Final Jeopardy – Monday, September 27, 2021

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Rock Legends) for Monday, September 27, 2021 (Season 38, Game 11):

A new studio album in 2020 gave him a top 5 album in 6 consecutive decades, his first in 1975

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s contestants:

Angélica Wilcox, an AV service support team lead from Kansas City, Kansas
Angelica Wilcox on Jeopardy!
Justin Stanley, a data scientist from Vancouver, Washington
Justin Stanley on Jeopardy!
Matt Amodio, a Ph.D student from New Haven, Connecticut (28-day total: $1,004,001)
Matt Amodio on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts: 28-day champion Matt Amodio goes for Win #29 today, having surpassed the $1 million mark after Friday’s big win. Amazingly, this is the first time that Matt has started a week with the same host that he had the previous week, with this being Mayim Bialik’s second week as host. Meanwhile, the Jeopardy! website has started having the same problems that it had in the James Holzhauer run. For some reason that I certainly can’t explain, the Jeopardy! web site only seems to be able to store six significant digits when it comes to a champion’s winnings, which means that a champion’s winnings somehow get rounded on their website once it passes the $1 million mark. While it’s a longstanding unfixed bug on their website, it’s another mark on their web team that also had difficulty earlier this season with contestant photographs.

For the benefit of new viewers who are just starting to become invested in Matt Amodio’s run, his choice to phrase every response with “What’s…” is perfectly acceptable per the rules of the show, and this also hasn’t been a relaxing of standards since the death of Alex Trebek. As I wrote about in 2016 (while Alex still was very much alive), the show has never cared about whether the phrasing is grammatically correct, even under Art Fleming in the 1960s and 1970s.

PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they are able to. When wearing a mask, ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

When Letter to You was released in 2020 and peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, rock legend Bruce Springsteen earned his 21st Top 5 album (17 of these were studio albums, 2 were compilation albums, and 2 were live albums) on that chart; Springsteen’s first Top 5 album was 1975’s Born to Run.

One thing that amused me about this Final Jeopardy! clue: both Christopher and Paula from last Wednesday’s game have spoken on Twitter about being Bruce Springsteen fans. I’m sure they’ll be wishing they got today’s Final instead of the one they got in their game!

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • Regarding the Neuchâtel clue, only “Neuchâtel” fit the category of A 9-LETTER “N”OUN. “Neufchâtel” is 10 letters and is therefore incorrect (and correctly ruled incorrect by the judges.

  1. huge sprinsteen fan 1975 was born to run. his more recent album is more obscure.

  2. Sad to say I didn’t get this one, despite being a fan. Hope Matt is able to get the runaway here, as we know he’s not a big pop culture guy. (Although Justin seems like a cool guy and I’m sure Angelica is a great human as well!)

What’s everyone’s favourite Springsteen song? I’m a Local Hero fan myself, probably my favourite song of all time by any artist.

    • My favorite Springsteen song is “Fire”, which he wrote in 1977. It’s on one of his live albums.

  3. I’m not sure I like this Final Jeopardy! clue. It seems there’s more than one correct response.

For instance, I believe that Paul McCartney also qualifies.
    McCartney – #1, 1970
    McCartney II – #3, 1980
    Flaming Pie – #2, 1997
    Memory Almost Full – #3, 2007
    Kisses On The Bottom – #5, 2012
    McCartney III – #2, 2020

    • Jim:

The clue specifically says “his first in 1975”; as you illustrate, McCartney’s first was 1970, not 1975.

The clue only has one correct response, and that is Springsteen.

      • Yes, you’re correct.

Jeopardy rule #1: read the entire clue carefully before you respond.

      • Credit where it’s due, the Jeopardy writers are usually pretty good at pinning FJs to one response. They often tie themselves in grammatical knots to get there, though not in this case.

Nice guess with McCartney, though–certainly no shame in putting that down.

  4. I was afraid to guess Springsteen as recently there was another rock band FJ! and I swore the answer was him and the E St band but was Journey..
Fave song…Born in the USA. no, not a deep track but I like it!

  5. Debbie Stover | September 27, 2021 at 1:34 pm |

    Rock on, Matt Amodio!

  6. A few decades back there was a final jeopardy clue, “the last day of the 20th century”, and the correct answer was December 31st, 2000. So, given that, I would have to argue that having an album in 2020 wouldn’t be in a 6th consecutive decade, it would have to be in 2021 – 2030 to meet that criteria.

    • @Mark0, you make an excellent point (although Billboard considers 2020 a separate decade), but it would not have made a difference in the final results because of Matt’s lead. So even if the contestants who lost complained to the producers that the question was not technically correct, they would not be allowed to come back
for a different episode because they lost regardless. Matt had four times as much money as Justin going into FJ, so the final results didn’t matter…except for Matt’s bank account!

      • I concur – definitely not arguable especially since they gave the year of the first and the latest. I just wanted to play devil’s advocate and say that it’s not technically six different decades.

      • Most places consider a decade to be a period of 10 years beginning in 0 and ending in 9.

        • And others consider a decade to be any consecutive period of 10 years. Not necessarily starting with a year beginning with either 0 or 1, and not even necessarily beginning on a January 1. By this definition, the clue is also correct.

  7. Bruce Springsteen was my response as I am a huge fan of him since Born to Run was my favorite song from him. The E Street band also made lots of other great albums.

Go Matt! Keep rocking on. You are almost at James Holzhauer’s 32 game record

  8. I had to facepalm when I saw the answer…WOW, having a hit album in 6 decades…that’s incredible! The only name clicked to me within 30 seconds was Sir Elton John, but I should’ve known he’s more of a pop star than a rocker, as specified by the category.

  9. Enjoying every one of your wins Matt
    Keep it up.

  10. Brad (not Rutter) | September 27, 2021 at 9:31 pm |

Just the kind of game I like- no tense moments.

  11. Robert Larson | September 28, 2021 at 8:24 pm |

How could Bruce have top-5 albums over “six decades” if his first top-5 album was in 1975? The clue makes no sense.

    • Decade 1: 1970s
      Decade 2: 1980s
      Decade 3: 1990s
      Decade 4: 2000s
      Decade 5: 2010s
      Decade 6: 2020s

(P.S.: If you’re going to spam the same comment over and over, you will be removed.)

  12. No one seemed to notice that Justin had an impish expression on his face when his final wager was announced, $1,701. 1701 is the registry number of the star ship Enterprise, from Star Trek, NCC1701.
