Today’s Final Jeopardy – Wednesday, September 29, 2021

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Mythology) for Wednesday, September 29, 2021 (Season 38, Game 13):

The Hippocrene Spring, sacred to the Muses, was so named because this offspring of Medusa brought it into being

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s contestants:

Adriana Granados, a student advisor from Fontana, California
Adriana Granados on Jeopardy!
Daniel Pecoraro, a nonprofit manager & tour guide from Brooklyn, New York
Daniel Pecoraro on Jeopardy!
Matt Amodio, a Ph.D student from New Haven, Connecticut (30-day total: $1,107,401)
Matt Amodio on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts: Matt picked up his 30th win yesterday; he’s just two wins behind James Holzhauer for #2 all-time. Tuesday and Wednesday are Matt’s strongest days of the week, and I would be absolutely shocked if Matt didn’t get to win #31 today.

One thing that I don’t understand about people: What do people have against excellence these days? You’re getting to watch one of the greatest players of all time play Jeopardy!, and your reaction is “Miss me with this”? No. Moreover, I have found that Matt has been one of the nicest champions, in the echelons of Buzzy Cohen in terms of just how great of a person he is. Just ask any of the people Matt has defeated; every single one of those players that I have spoken to have had nothing but kind things to say about Matt.

PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they are able to. When wearing a mask, ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

The Hippocrene Spring, in Greek mythology, was created by the hooves of Pegasus on Mt. Helicon; drinking its water was said to give the drinker poetic inspiration.

The Pegasus, one of the most famous creatuers in Greek myth, was the famed winged horse that, in some myths, was born when Perseus decapitated its mother Medusa. It has also been said that springs would generally burst forth whenever the Pegasus’ hooves struck ground.

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • $50,600 is the 48th-highest regular-play one-day total of all time. The full top 100 will be updated once the full country has had today’s episode air.
  • Another reminder to viewers who may not be aware of the show’s rules: Leading articles may be added, dropped, or changed with another article with impunity, unless ambiguity is created with another well-known work. Thus, with regards to today’s Daily Double in SOUTHERN LITERATURE, “The Color Purple”, “Color Purple” and “A Color Purple” are all considered equal (and equally correct) in the eyes of the show.

  1. I’m surprised to find myself defending James H., never been much of a fan, team Ken atw here, but it might be his way of welcoming Matt to the club. Having watched The Chase a few times, the backstage insults they throw around at each other seem to be all in good fun, but that sort of roasting never translates on social media.

  2. Brad (not Rutter) | September 29, 2021 at 5:02 pm |

If you don’t like Matt, there’s something wrong with you. Watching him play every day is a joy, and it will be a very sad when he loses.

    • I’m not a psychiatrist, but I think the reason some people don’t like him is because they don’t like seeing anyone more intelligent than them. Forget the fact that 99.99999999% of people couldn’t even come close to passing a Jeopardy test, let alone become a multi-week champ. So it makes them feel better to say nasty things about someone so intelligent, yet I notice they continue to watch.
This is the current state of our country. It can’t be a win-win (Matt wins, and everyone enjoys watching him win). It’s got a be a lose-win, so the only time these people can “win”, or feel good, is if Matt loses. Sad.

  3. Being fairly new to this site, i love all the statistics, however, can someone enlighten me as to why Brad Rutter is not #1 on the All Time Jeopardy! Winnings, Regular Play Only list ?

    • He won three different tournaments where his prize was either $1 million or $2 million.

His regular run took place when contestants were still limited to 5 games, so a very small amount of his winnings came in regular play.

  4. I love Jeopardy and enjoy following/cheering for Matt. He is humble, sweet, fun, happy…what’s not to like. I hope he continues his long run. I’m sure we’ve not send the last of him. I certainly hope not. And to those who are negative, your loss if you can’t see it.

  5. Fun clue fact: Clue answer “Wind Beneath My Wings” was the main song off of the Beaches soundtrack performed by lead actress Bette Midler, who was portrayed in the movie as a young girl by Jeopardy interim host Mayim Bialik.

    • Having grown up in the 80s and watched Beaches many times, I noticed the connection immediately! I wonder if she was over there grinning or trying hard to keep a poker face. 😉

    • Frank Borland | September 29, 2021 at 7:58 pm |

Diana, I also said the same thing when I saw that clue.

  6. Watching Matt operate on this show is richly entertaining, just as it was when James was on his streak. You don’t win 30+ games by accident. You’ve got to be really, really good.

  7. I enjoy reading this site’s final jeopardy answer and thinking about the correct question. Thank you posting it in a way to not give anything away. I didn’t figure out the correct question until about a minute before they said it. Pretty hard. I think Matt is great. Enjoy watching him. Enjoy watching anyone who can win 5 days in a row.

  8. Hadn’t heard about Holzhauer’s tweet about Amodio. It was funny and clearly intended to be so. Matt fired back and his tweet was also really funny. This is not bad sportsmanship, this is welcoming to the club.

  9. As long as Matt is on, “do not call me at 7:00”. Amazing how one can be so knowledgeable and humble at the same time. So enjoyable to watch.

  10. Michael Falkner | September 29, 2021 at 10:33 pm |

And, with that win (depending on how you view John Carpenter’s $250,000 half-to-charity Tournament of Champions Millionaire win, Amodio is now the 10th highest winner in all of game shows.

  11. Interestingly, I think this question was easier for the contestants than us at home. I got it quickly, but I could see “this offspring of Medusa” having people not well versed in Myth thinking of people and names rather than creatures. The contestant however get to know “who is” or “what is” before final, and so by knowing it’s not a “who” that helps narrow things down or change thinking, which the audience playing along doesn’t get.

I’m curious if this has really happened before with knowing the “who” or “what” changing the difficulty of a clue, and how often that happens.

I look forward to watching Jeopardy every night. Matt Amodio is my absolute favorite contestant of all times. His vast knowledge is amazing and makes the game so exciting. His humble attitude only makes him more of a champion. I hope he breaks all the records that have ever been set.
