It’s Thursday, and it’s Day 1 of the Final of the 29th Tournament of Champions! Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Music & Geography) for Thursday, September 9, 2021 (Season 37, Game 174):
In a British folk tune, the title lass Maggie May is sentenced to go way down south to this penal colony that rhymes with her name
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s contestants:
Sam Kavanaugh, a teacher originally from Carlton, Minnesota![]() |
Jennifer Quail, a wine tasting consultant from Dowagiac, Michigan![]() |
Veronica Vichit-Vadakan, a librarian from Portland, Oregon![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts: Season 38 begins September 13 with the return of 18-day champion Matt Amodio; in the interim, Jeopardy! is running four weeks of reruns. The first two weeks were the 10 “Alex Around the World” episodes that ran in his memory in late December; the 2021 Tournament of Champions, hosted by Buzzy Cohen, will air from August 30 through September 10. Today’s episode was the first day of the final of the 2021 Tournament of Champions that originally aired on May 27, 2021.
PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they are able to. When wearing a mask, ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

Correct response: What is Botany Bay?
More information about Final Jeopardy: (The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2021 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)
Botany Bay is the location where James Cook first landed the HMS Endeavour in Australia. Currently located near Sydney, the Sydney area became a British penal colony; regardless of whether the colony was located at Botany Bay itself or the nearby Sydney Cove, “Botany Bay” became the British colloquial term for the entire area.
Now, I was only partly adjacent to the TikTok sea shanty craze; did Maggie May show up as part of that?
Finally: I absolutely hate this clue. Botany Bay only shows up in alternate lyrics of the song, and certainly not the Beatles version of this tune. I think that the clue was too flimsy because “Botany Bay” doesn’t show up in every version of the song and is inappropriate for any level of the show, let alone a Tournament of Champions final.

I have to buzz in with, “Who is Buzzy Cohen as a great choice to take Jeopardy! into the next season and beyond.”
Everyone has their favorite for permanent host, but Buzzy is probably on most top 5 lists and just as importantly, on few if any lists of hosts they would not want! So if Buzzy’s chosen after the process plays out, it’s one virtually everyone could happily live with!
Agree completely, Danny!
I love it how he told the contestants how he finished Day 1 with $0 and still won. I like a host who can encourage the contestants.
