Today’s Final Jeopardy – Thursday, October 21, 2021

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category World Geography) for Thursday, October 21, 2021 (Season 38, Game 29):

This country of 16,600 square miles has a possession more than 50 times as large

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s contestants:

Holly Van Leuven, a writer & editor originally from Pittston, Pennsylvania
Holly Van Leuven on Jeopardy!
Erin Coningsby, a product manager from Redmond, Washington
Erin Coningsby on Jeopardy!
Jonathan Fisher, an actor originally from Coral Gables, Florida (8-day total: $193,800)
Jonathan Fisher on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts: Jonathan Fisher is sitting on 8 wins, and will tie Buzzy Cohen today if he wins his 9th; Buzzy currently holds the record for the longest run after beating a superchampion. (He defeated Andrew Pau, who had won 6 games.)

On a slightly more personal note: From October 16-23, there will be a 168-hour charity live-streaming relay on Twitch to raise money for the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada; more information can be found at 1 in 385 Canadians live with MS. (I just completed my own shift in the relay earlier this morning.) Over $30,000 has been raised since the start of the week!

PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they are able to. When wearing a mask, ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

Correct response: What is Denmark?

Did you know that you can now find game-by-game stats of everyone, now including Jason Zuffranieri and James Holzhauer, who has won 10 or more games on Jeopardy!, here on the site?

Denmark’s possession more than 50 times as large is the island of Greenland, located in the Arctic. To me, this feels like a reasonably straightforward Final Jeopardy.

Today’s interviews:
Holly taught ESL to Russian citizens using the works of Fred Astaire.
Erin has dogs that will not eat unless she watches them.
Jonathan is a cupcake fan and won a karaoke contest with a prize of cupcakes.

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • Erin was doing a great job of finding Daily Doubles. However, I was disappointed by the very conservative Daily Double betting. Conservative bets like that are not the way to defeat a superchampion.

  1. Congrats to Jonathan on tying Buzzie Cohen’s record for longest streak by a winner over a super champ (6 or more wins)! Now he’s a win from being an ultra champ (10 or more) himself, after beating an ultra champ, by far the longest such streak following an ultra champ.

Fortunately for him, he got FJ correct else the streak would be over.

  2. There was a news item a few years ago that Trump contacted Denmark for the U.S. to buy Greenland.

  3. If you’re able to get on the show, you’re good and should be willing to bet on yourself if the situation arises.

    • Could’ve been in the lead with both DDs doubled, and there’s no reason not to go all in with $1,800 early. Must’ve been sports clue hesitation, but non-sports fans can usually get them, like Yogi Berra in the final the other week.
