Today’s Final Jeopardy – Wednesday, October 6, 2021

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Historic Calendars) for Wednesday, October 6, 2021 (Season 38, Game 18):

Following Messidor, this summer month in the 18th-century French Revolutionary calendar had a name meaning “heat gift”

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s contestants:

Casey Brown, a marketing manager from Long Beach, California
Casey Brown on Jeopardy!
David Garcia, an IT communications strategy team lead from Troy, Michigan
David Garcia on Jeopardy!
Matt Amodio, a Ph.D student from New Haven, Connecticut (35-day total: $1,400,801)
Matt Amodio on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts: Matt has had an incredibly strong week thus far; I’d be shocked if today was the day that he lost. I’m sure Casey and David have something to say about that, though!

Another point I’d like to make, though, as this does come up during long runs like this: if you’re going to cite statistics that I’ve compiled, it’s only fair to credit my hard work by providing a citation link back to the website. Thanks to everyone who has given the requisite citations when posting my stats elsewhere – I appreciate you!

PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they are able to. When wearing a mask, ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

In 1793, during the French Revolution, as part of the overall decimalization of the country, saw the calendar separated into 12 30-day months and five or six extra days, and each month separated into 3 10-day weeks. The 12 months were Vendémiaire, Brumaire, Frimaire, Nivôse, Pluviôse, Ventôse, Germinal, Floréal, Prairial, Messidor, Thermidor, and Fructidor. The “new year” was considered to be the autumnal equinox.

Was Mayim a little too fast in accepting Matt’s response “What is Adams?” for the very last clue of the Jeopardy round?  ($200 clue in 1800s U.S. History)      There is more than one president named Adams. Shouldn’t Matt have been asked to be more specific?

To me, knowing just a bit about the French Revolution, I thought this answer was one of the easiest I’ve ever seen on Final Jeopardy. Really surprised nobody got it. And no, the answer was not confusing if you read it carefully. But, c’est la vie.

  3. A bit bonkers to consider that even if Casey had found the second DD immediately after the first and doubled up again, she still wouldn’t have had enough to catch Matt. Assuming everything else played out as it did, of course.

Unfortunately, even if she was able to be catch up to Matt’s total by 50%, she was wrong with FJ and wouldn’t have won. It would have been more exciting to see if he would lose, I will admit, but nonetheless, that didn’t happen.

I looked at the FJ clue ahead of time here on JF as is my wont now and then and didn’t have the slightest idea–for some reason (something akin to indifference regarding the subject matter I guess) I didn’t immediately scroll down for the correct answer…I then decided to watch the show that evening and a second or two after they revealed the FJ “answer” (specifically “Messidor” staring at me) Thermidor popped into my head…I didn’t even know specifically it referred to the name of a month…)
