Andy’s Pregame Thoughts: Yesterday’s game saw Andrew He break a record that not even James Holzhauer or Ken Jennings could break: the largest ever first victory on the show, at $52,001—breaking Myron Meyer’s record of $50,000 set back in 2002. The most recent Tournament of Champions winner, Sam Kavanaugh, mentioned on Twitter yesterday that Andrew had helped Sam prepare for the Tournament. This certainly explains why Andrew is such a strong player in his own right! Andrew’s first-game correct response numbers weren’t quite as eye-popping as Matt Amodio’s were a few months ago, but Andrew is certainly a strong enough player that I’d be shocked if he didn’t win a second game today.
PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they are able to. When wearing a mask, ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

Correct response: What is the Hope Diamond?

Jean Baptiste Tavernier sold what is now known as the Hope Diamond in 1668 to King Louis XIV; it lasted in French hands for over a century before being looted in the French Revolution. From there, it ended up in the hands of King George IV, who sold it in 1830 to pay off massive debts. About a decade later, it was recorded as being in the hands of the Hope family, from where it gets its current name. The diamond was donated to the Smithsonian Institution in 1958. Trace amounts of boron in the stone give the diamond its blue color. The stone currently is about 45 carats (the original stone in 1668 was 112 3/16 carats).
