Today’s Final Jeopardy – Monday, January 3, 2022

Happy New Year and welcome to 2022! Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Sculptors) for Monday, January 3, 2022 (Season 38, Game 81):

Los Angeles artist George Stanley sculpted this, first handed out at a private banquet on May 16, 1929

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s contestants:

Kate Woomer-Deters, a legal services attorney from Raleigh, North Carolina
Kate Woomer-Deters on Jeopardy!
Harsh Daga, an analyst from Brooklyn, New York
Harsh Daga on Jeopardy!
Amy Schneider, an engineering manager from Oakland, California (23-day total: $855,600)
Amy Schneider on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts: Amy Schneider enters 2022 as a 23-day champion, and less than $145,000 from the $1 million mark. With a good week, she’ll make the $1 million mark by the end of it!

If you’ve been through my Ultrachampion statistics section, you’ll have seen a statistic called “Dominance”. I may write up more about it later, but it’s a statistic I devised; it’s basically a logarithmic calculation of how dominant a player was compared to second place (or, if they were behind, the leader). It’s a stat that can be taken for an individual game and on aggregate. I am also being deliberately coy at this time about it, because it could turn into an effective copytrap against someone who might otherwise want to lift statistics wholesale without realizing the context.

PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they are able to, including any boosters as recommended. When wearing a mask, please ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

Correct response: What is the Oscar (statuette)?

Did you know that you can now find game-by-game stats of everyone, now including Matt Amodio, Jonathan Fisher, and Amy Schneider, who has won 10 or more games on Jeopardy!, here on the site?

Today’s Final Jeopardy! clue is the epitome of why I believe that contestants should only take the category into account as an absolute final consideration when determining their wager. Here at the Jeopardy! Fan, I’d like to acknowledge that yes, this clue is ostensibly a sculptor clue, but in reality it’s a movie clue. The writers do this all of the time, and it’s a tactic in order in order to make sure that the contestants keep betting to win. By the way, some fun facts about the Oscar statuette: it’s 13.5 inches tall and weighs 8.5 pounds.

Moreover, it seems like the only way I can keep my thoughts from ending up on YouTube is by reminding everyone that there is someone who is copying information from one of the various Jeopardy! recapping areas, this site included, and posting them as YouTube comments. A couple of months ago, there was a user who was taunting me in my comments section about the idea of copyright, and I suspect that this user might be the culprit. (No, the comments were not made public, and I obviously do not have concrete proof. There are multiple people who it could be in my eyes) I do appreciate all of the users who are calling the person out on YouTube, though.

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • Today’s episode was taped less than a week after the superchampion/ultrachampion flap that I was in on Twitter; I feel as though Ken used the term “superchampion” a lot, considering.
  • Both the $31,000 Coryat and $42,000 final score make it onto my top Coryats list and my top one-day totals list.

Kind of statistically outrageous that Harsh hit both DJ daily doubles with a overall first-in rate of 5.26%. And conversely that Amy hit none with a first-in rate of 61.4%, and 35 correct responses. Amy was always winning this game of course, but had a couple daily doubles gone her way she could have set a new personal best for daily winnings.
